What kind of computer chair should I get?

I've been using this stiff totally wooden dinner-chair at my computer since I built the thing last summer, and I think it's time for me to move on.

I've seen some good deals on chairs at Office Depot, but I keep hearing that if I buy one of the cheap chairs (60-100$), the foam will go flat after a while and they'll become uncomfortable.

Can anyone offer me any insight on this? Even compacted foam should feel better than this chair I'm using right now... but I don't want to spend 90$ on a chair that dies after 3 months.

herman miller aeron chairs are the best you can do. if you sit in front of your computer for more than an hour at a time, it will be the best investment you'll ever make for your computer.

Leather sounds and looks nice but you'll get tired of the feeling...especially during summer :)

I don't agree .... I got one from these deals and it's perfect even now !
more' n 1 yr. it has been tolerating my ass and much worse ;)

if you have the money get one of these -

Aeron

Leap

i've got an aeron - 6 years old - looks like new - FANTASTIC chair - worth the price (paid about $700 for it back then)

you get what you pay for - if you can afford it, each one of these chairs should last forever (well, at least ten years i would think, probably longer), they are built for heavy duty use, they are extremely comfortable, and even have a good resale value!

not cheap, but a good value.

Do NOT get an Aeron.

I am sitting one in one right now and wish I could have my chair from home right now. They are not all THAT comfy, and they are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced.

Buy a nice leather executive chair for a couple hundred bucks and spend the other $500-700 on something worthwhile.

As someone who has owned an Aeron for a couple of years I can say that it is honestly worth the seemingly outrageous price that these chairs go for. Sitting in a padded chair (leather, cloth or whatnot) I find that after just an hour or two I start to get really uncomfortable... back and neck stiffen up some and I find that I sometimes get some numb-ness in my lower extremities (especially my feet).

I have none of these problems with my Aeron.

I never have this problem with my 169.00 Office Depot Chair.

I guess I should qualify my statement made above:

I sit in an Aeron 8+ hours a day, 5 days a week.

They still suck. The leather chairs up in the boardroom are much more comfortable.

But what do those guys at Herman Miller know anyway? They only spent years studying the ergonomics of the human body in a sitting position when they designed the Aeron chair. Obviously they really spent all that time smoking grass.

As to not getting stiff joints, etc, I guess that I'm just older than some of you guys.

In many cases companies put those big leather chairs in for show.... as they make quite the impression... the Aeron chairs are typically more expensive (you can get a pretty good leather executive chair for under $500 and a fully decked out Aeron is closer to $800). The reason companies buy the Aeron chairs for their "grunts" is that they have seen studies showing that people who work in those chairs report fewer computer use type injuries (repetitive stress and back injuries).

Perhaps they spent that time coming up with a clever marketing scheme? The placebo effect works wonders you know. :D;)

This is funny, because I just went to Office Depot today and bought a chair. I must have looked like a fool going from chair to chair. When it got down to the last two I rolled them from opposite sides of the store and put them next to one another so my butt could remember what each felt like.

I finally decided on the cheaper of the two because it had a better back. Neither of the chairs are on their web page. It has a web like the Aeron.

That is how I picked my chair. The sales people were kind enough to leave me alone while I was testing.

This is what I have. Love it. Bought two, actually. Got them on sale for about $50 each.

At work I have Herman Miller Ergon 3. It's nice. Really great actually for a full day of work. My home chairs are more comfortable for surfing. I figure I can buy 13 OfficeMax chairs for the price of the Ergon 3. That's a new chair every year for 13 years.

Whew, I don't know about those mega buck chairs, but my father-in-law grabbed an awesome desk chair from an estate liquidation store. It was roughly 30 years old and is VERY comfy. You might find a similar chair at a used office furniture store. Any chair that lasts that long is obviously durable quality. Price will be great too!

...or screw it, build your own! LOL! :D
