i'm planning on making a p3 gig system and want to know what kind of cd rom will work best with a fairly high end setup? also, is it good to have a separate cdrw, dvd, and a regular cdrom? is it bad to use the cdrw/dvd to read cd's? thanks!

If you are going IDE, my suggestion is Toshiba for CD-ROM or DVD. For SCSI CD-ROM, Plextor is the way to go. Toshiba is also my choice for SCSI DVD. As far as a CDRW, I'd go with a Plextor (or one of the rebranded derivatives), or Yamaha. Plextor's IDE CDRW's with Burnproof are very nice and are probably the best choice there as well. I have a HP 9350i which is 10x4x32. That would be a solid choice as well. I haven't made a coaster yet, and I've burned everything so far at 10X (on 8x media no less) except for some audio that I burned at 2x.

thank! one question though...if i go with the cdrw and the dvd, isn't it bad to use either as a regular cdrom? as in playing games or playing music...etc?
Why would it be bad? i have a Creative 5X DVD and a Creative 4224 burner, i always use my DVD drive for everything, have been for almost 2 years, no problems. I only use my CDR drive if the CD is scratched(has a more fine tuned lasr i guess cause it can read some cd's my DVD cant)
i thought that it would be bad because once i used my writer to upload some songs (i did quite a few) and when i tried to burn a cd afterward, it came out sounding terrible. squeaks and scratchy noises all over the place. it was an HP 9150. thanks!
It's not necessary but I prefer having a separate CD-ROM and CD-RW. I like the convenience of burning direct from one CD to another. (FYI: my reader is an Acer 50X; my burner is a Sony Spressa 8X/4X/32X.)
I use whatever drive happens to have the CD in it. 
It does no harm to use your RW drive as a regular CD-ROM. I do it all the time. Having two drives is alot easier for copying CD's.
