I see these around a lot of traffic lights in my neighborhood.

I am trying to figure out if they are traffic cameras, red light cameras or traffic sensors.

Anyone have an idea?

Look like traffic cams.

Btw did you take those with an EOS-1Ds Mark III or 5D2?

How did you know? It was with a 5DMk2.

OK. I guess traffic cams make sense. I wish they put traffic sensors on the lights. It's ridiculous to be idling waiting for the light when there is absolutely no traffic around.

I saw the ridiculous image size and knew it was not from a point and shoot. Simple math came out with around 21 MP, and there are only 2 21 MP DSLR cameras out there...

Ah nice call. I really should resize my pics but I'm too lazy. It's a real pain when I post on other forums where I can embed pics into the thread.

Umm.. around here I see those camera's tied to the red light camera's. If there are no flashing systems near by its probably just a traffic monitorin camera, but i dont know why so large, around here those camera's are tiny.

They are light control sensors, if that's what other posters meant by traffic cam, then I'm just repeating. But I've always considered traffic cams to only be a monitoring device of traffic flow, and not directly tied in to controlling indiviual lights.

Those are primarily traffic cameras, like to feed the DOT live camera page. But they can also be tied into a computer for red light violations if they so desire. Time was when a red light camera was a big box (about shoebox or so) and had a very bright flash for nightime. Now they can do it with what you see here.

So in other words. It could be a red light camera, a traffic monitoring camera or a traffic light control camera.

I guess there is no unanimous answer.
