What kind of camcorder do you use?

canon dc410. I don't want to spend more than that really, and it was the top-rated one on consumerreports.

DVD is inferior to hard drive. The hard drive is faster, holds more and really darn easy to copy over to your computer whenever you're ready.
You can also instantly delete anything you dont like. And even with an extended battery I always lose power before I run out of space.

BUT, now that you mention it I do seem to recall DVD camcorders being all the rage for a while. I just never got one. I moved from VHS straight to my cute little HD based sony. I skipped over miniDV and all that stuff.

Isn't HDD kinda not the best though as far as holding up in the long run...? / hard drive failure..?

By that logic we should never have used them in our computers to hold operating systems.

😕

Hard drives are perfectly fine in most PCs... they're stationery, or close to it. Their overall lifetime is relatively short (5 years or less, usually). Camcorders, on the other hand, are frequently toss, jostled, and are constantly moving while the platters are spinning. That's not good on hard drives (I know that some can handle it much better than others). Camcorders, at least in my experience, are also expected (by the average consumer) to last a lot longer than a PC.

FWIW, the last camcorder I had was a MiniDV. Don't have one right now; will probably look for a flash-based camcorder next I need one.

Sorry Shortylickens,

I left out the whole HDD's being not very good when it came to bumps, vibrations, etc.

I have this.

720P, my 16GB flash card allows me to record 2 hours of continuous HD video.
Holy crap, I didn't think a simple camera could do that with video. My 5MP camera only does something like 30 seconds of low resolution video. 🙂

The only downsides I see with something like that is lack of a nice optical zoom and such? Still though its' pretty cheap.

I didn't know camcorders were that good now. I always thought it was kind of weak a number of years ago where they had digital ones but the storage format was never really ideal to me (like a disc based one didn't seem good). Now that we have flash drives that are big and cheap I'd guess they would be the best to go with.

I use my digital camera for videos. I was almost this close to just about buying a camcorder but since I don't know anything about them I shelved the idea. I also chose not to vote in your poll since my opinion wouldn't provide any benefit to you. So basically, yeah, this is a nef post.

Flash!

I currently have an Aiptek GVS. I was highly considering the ZS3/TZ7 to replace it, but after checking out the raw footage @ 720p@60fps, it doesnt shoot true 60fps, just doubles frames. The GVS 720p 60fps mode is amazing, with 5 hrs for a 16gb SDHC card. If you're content with 30fps, the ZS3 would be the Point and Shoot for you!
