What kind of cable do I need to hook a EUR PS2 up to a US TV and play US games on it?

Buddy in the UK is shipping me a EUR PS2 for free, what do I need for it? Someone told me I need an RGB cable? I looked up RGB cables on Ebay, and there's a huge friggin plug on the TV end that doesn't look like anything I could ever plug into any TV I've ever seen.

Anyone who can point me in the right direction for the type of cable I need to pick up? Thanks.

It might not be as free as you think. You'll need a PAL to NTSC converter box just to display the video and the game discs sold in the US may not be playable without hacks on the PAL PS2. You might want to do some more research before your buddy ships it to you and make sure you know how to make it work the way you want.

This. It's way more complicated than just a simple cable.

You may want to make sure your TV can't take 576i50 input (aka, PAL) before buying a converter device. IIRC, my HDTV handles it just fine.

This is all very discouraging.

Why didn't someone tell me this yesterday before I posted this and before he shipped it out already?

Ahh well, you live, you learn, you die, and you take everything you learned with you, which is generally stuff everybody else knows anyway.

Sounds like maybe I can hook it into a TV card on my PC pretty easily tho maybe?

That would work? I could do that. I have a crapload of PS2 titles I've bought since I got my 60GB PS3, was hoping to set the PS2 up in my home office to play sometime.

Are the subsequent costs worth it just because the initial cost was free? It all could be higher. It may be unintended but this is a classic case of baiting.

Just buy a used PS2 and call it a day. They can't be more than $50.

Most TV's produced in the last 8-9 years should be able to do both NTSC and PAL50/60. Well, euro ones do. I'd be surprised if a US spec deletyed the menu option to switch to PAL.

So your saying my Toshiba 27-inch 27A32 made in 2002 can take PAL inputs?

If your lucky. Like I said, all TVs are able to do both, with settings for the market they are sold into. My old 28" JVC in one of my spare rooms from 2000 can do NTSC (two colour types), PAL50 and PAL60. All I have to do is choose it from the picture menu.

Maybe that's how they sell them in the UK but I've never seen a tv here in the states with that option.

Frankly thats not surprising. I guess the attitude is US is the king of the world and we expect everyone else to conform to us.

I'll have to check out my LCD TV bought last year to see if it will accept a PAL input. I did try to play a PAL DVD on my PS3 and it complained about the format and wouldn't play Dr Who.

That's a real shame, as I can guarantee all the TVs can do it. It's just a firmware thing.

Guarantee after what build date? My Toshiba is 2002 built according to the plate on the back.
