Essential? No; but one of the better uses of new tech. There isn't a single advantage to using a landline over a cell aside from slightly better up time. I could justify using a horse as primary transportation before I could justify a landline.

Have you ever used a landline? I only ask because there may actually be people who post on this forum who have not. The call quality is 100x better and I would love to have that level of clarity on my cell. Even the digital phones we have at work don't touch the level of clarity Ma Bell used to provide.

With that said, I don't own a landline anymore nor do I intend to any time soon.

Certainly. There was no such thing as walking with a phone when I grew up. They were glued to a wail, or sat solidly on a table. I don't find the quality that much worse with cells. For me, a phone is purely a communication /tool/. I don't joy call, and I don't appreciate the finer details of clear sound on a utilitarian tool. Portability is much more valuable to me, as well as the stupid little tools even the most basic dumb phone provides. Since I quit smoking, I don't carry my Zippo lantern, so having a glowing brick is very useful, as is always having a 'pencil and paper' when I need to write something down quickly.

Right now, I don't have a phone of any kind. I don't use them enough to justify getting one atm. It also makes me happy when I can put N/A into a form section asking for phone number :^D I do want to get an Android. I haven't worked out the particulars, but I'm looking for a hackable phone, that can be used on a prepaid service. I want the computer, and won't use cell data at all. It'll be used like a standard phone.

One of my roommates insists on having a landline because they don't have a cell phone. Surprise, surprise -- the only phone jack is in my bedroom. So the cordless base station has to go there.

That means whenever the battery dies, the base station makes a terrible beeping. Also, whenever the phone needs to be charged they enter my forbidden lair and touch my shit.
I didn't have a cell phone until I was 31-32. And the kind of animal that meet your requirements if the one that can chuckle at putting poor people needing roommates.

Online banking may require a cellphone/sms for the two factor authentication process. And I think gmail used an sms confirmation code for new account creation (probably to cut down on spam or something similar) last year or a little before that.

I had a roommate at 31 and 3 years prior. My house, she paid rent/half utilities. She was smoking hot.......with .......a boyfriend.:(

Upside, she was a clean freak and only stayed there a few days a week unless she and the boyfriend were fighting.

I have a cell phone for use when I'm outside the apartment but I also have a landline as my regular phone and for my ADSL. Moreover, the intercom buzzer for the building main entrance (to let people like Purolator or the pizza delivery guy in) will work only with a landline I was told.

Not only do I have a landline, my phone is corded and doesn't have call display. :D

Here's another idea, every person gets their own voip phone, setup asterisk with an IVR prompt. No more running around with the phone "It's for you!" May even work as a way to weed out telemarketers.
