Among my friends, the one who held out the longest before finally getting a cell phone was a programmer AND the easiest to get in touch with. He used a VOIP service along with Google Voice so he'd get an email whenever he received a message. Since he didn't have a cell phone, instead he had to rely on advance planning in order to meet you places. And he never let me down.

Back in high school and earlier, before everyone had a cell phone, you actually had to plan things ahead. You might tell someone you're meeting them at a restaurant at a specific time over a day ahead of time and it wasn't an issue. Nowadays people just wing it and more often than not screw it up.

Many of the people I know don't even answer their phones. One of them has a smartphone that is always dead because the battery sucks and she rarely charges it. And even on the extremely rare occasion when her phone isn't dead, she doesn't answer it anyway. And she still sucks at meeting up too. We'll invite her over and she'll be an hour late, or not show up at all, without so much as a courtesy call.

Not smartphones, cellphones. Big difference.

Although I would look down on him for having a flip dumb phone, we could still hang out.

I wouldn't be caught dead with some dude that doesn't even have a cellphone, what are you supposed to tell chix at the club when they ask for your phone #? What kind of life could you be living at 25 years old without a cellphone? Not one I want to be a part of :p

It doesn't have to be a smart phone, though having a computer in your pocket is very convenient. I don't see why everyone wouldn't want their own personal communicator. You call a landline in a house full of people, there's no guarantee you'll get the person you want. Call a cell, and you always get the exact person you want to talk to. It also goes with you. If you don't want calls, you turn it off. A landline just sits there, and looks stupid and unhelpful.

I do think it's interesting that an invention that didn't come along till within our own lifetimes (well, half of us at least) is now considered essential in modern society. People even get butt hurt when you don't answer their calls immediately. Most folks with cell phones think nothing of phoning or texting any time of the day and night. So, let me get this straight, we've given up some privacy and social skills for immediate impersonal contact? Oh, I get it. "Youts" no longer have to deal with the horrendous prospect of face to face rejection, actually leaving the basement or, acquiring patience.

A cellphone isn't essential for everyone, but for a 25 year old, its pretty damn essential to have an active social life.

You don't need one if you're married, have kids and are 40 years old because nobody cares what you're doing any way.

I imagine you fit the latter demographic more than the former and thus, don't understand

Essential? No; but one of the better uses of new tech. There isn't a single advantage to using a landline over a cell aside from slightly better up time. I could justify using a horse as primary transportation before I could justify a landline.

Or just get a phone system with two charging bases.

cordless-phone.jpg

this is rocket science to some people

hell some come with 3-4 extra handsets and chargers, the things aren't worth much anymore.

One of my roommates insists on having a landline because they don't have a cell phone. Surprise, surprise -- the only phone jack is in my bedroom. So the cordless base station has to go there.

That means whenever the battery dies, the base station makes a terrible beeping. Also, whenever the phone needs to be charged they enter my forbidden lair and touch my shit.

rewire so the jack is in their room

What's so hard about that?

Since when does a cell phone give you an active social life? What you're saying is "I'm so self absorbed by god if people aren't calling me every minute of the day I must be doing something wrong". Let me guess, you don't leave FB much either? :p

And no, I didn't take offense..I'm not THAT old yet :) I've just always hated phones (even landlines) and the thought that I need to be available to everyone all the time at their convenience annoys me. That's what answering machines and voice mail are for.

On topic though - the fact that the OP thinks that people who don't have cell phones are animals is just wrong. Even dogs have cell phones...

A corded phone land line doesn't depend on your house having power so during a period of prolonged power outages you don't have to be concerned about not being able to reach someone because you ran out of power. Also - I believe they are less prone to 'capacity' issues during crises.

Not likely to happen or happen often but a comforting piece of mind to some people (Not that I have a land line at all)

Cell phones can still use car chargers. Cordless land line phones stop working entirely when the power goes out, at least cell phones can still make calls as long as they have battery power.

I'm 26 and I only recently got a cell phone. TBH the only reason I got it is because I had it as a company phone before and most of my family knew the number so figured I'd keep it for personal use and transfer to my name when I switched jobs. I still have a land line which is the number I give to most people like my bank, various services etc....

Way I see it, if I'm at home, it's a good time to reach me, if I'm driving, it's illegal to use a cell phone while driving so I could not answer it anyway, if I'm at work, they can leave a voice mail. I only give my cell number to family while landline I give to pretty much everyone else like any services like utilities etc...

As for the jack situation, just run another jack to his room.

Omg lol

I know a guy who went into foreclosure the same way. "I have no money I can't pay my mortgage" *goes out to concert, buys iphone, goes on road trip, buys new car*

Blows my mind really. The economy is sooooooooooooooooo screwed. Student loans are going to be like that. I know someone who graduated, made it to 26 on credit cards and is now panicking about health insurance. Maybe they could pay it out of pocket for awhile if they didn't go to Hawaii on CC's instead of looking for a job? yea? no? WTF is this shit lmao. Something like 50%+ of people are a financial disaster.

No one under 30 can do jack shit really.

Either leech off the bank of momy and daddy to success if they are wealthy enough, or be poor, or perpetually live off debt and pay interest. I'm not sure if being legit poor, or having negative net wealth makes someone poorer.

Some people who are a "success" as far as their family is concerned is like -200k in the hole at 7.2% interest, which is costing them 14.4k per year in wealth. Which is about 1/3rd of their take home pay. They MUST stop taking out loans to get ahead of the debt, but at the same time need a new car, etc.

High debt loads is like the topic everyone just kinda ignores.

Wearing shoes in the house is like a gateway drug. Once these barbarians got a taste of living in their own filth, there was no stopping them. No cell phones, eating feces, shedding hair in the shower, the list goes on.

Animals indeed. I suggest you move out.

How long you banned for now?

If cellphone service goes out and you have a landline, the only two people who you'll be able to reach will be your grandma and 911. Everyone else will be unreachable, because THEIR cellphones are also out.

This is the type of "maybe science & technology isn't the best idea all the time"

We think its progress but we're just sacrificing reliability for consumerism gimmicks. In the age of technology & communication if the power went out it would be harder to get ahold of people than in 1985.

Never owned a cell phone, but I grew up in a time when only wealthy people had them and I sure didn't know any wealthy people. The internet seems recent, though PCs have always been around. I own a PC and a tablet and used to have a laptop but didn't use it after the tablet. I keep meaning to replace.

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Either keep obama in president to get an obama phone or get a phone line extension and plug the phone in outside your room.
