What kind of an idiot would pay $100/yr for domain registration?

One of the managers at my company actually used Verisign name registration/web hosting for lots of $$$$... us web guys had to straighten him out quick.

Since we're on this subject, which is the best and most cost efficient company for domain renewal?

Thanks,

netsol offered me $20/year for a renewal of my main domain in December. To me it was worth it for the peace of mind, knowing they'll actually be around next year, unlike half of the $10/year companies.

maybe this 100 dollar domain registration is so someone can launder money? i mean, you set up the company, have someone who owes you register 100 bs names under an anonymous name, and blammo, tax time. :D it's too early in morning

What happens if your 10/year company goes under 6 months into it? You dont lose the domain name do you?

I know jack all about registering, btu even *I* know thats just highway robbery!!

And now a story, a few years back when I did a little web design for my previous employer, I had went to lunch with a friend. We're walkin around talkin about web sites, and the janitor comes up to me and gives me a business card telling me he can register whatever name we want. All for 80 bucks a year. I was like...Ummm, yeahhhh.......

But, I did need some scratch paper so I guess it worked out ok

Exactly No less than two of the cheapie registration services I use either went belly up or they resold their services, and the people who sold me the domain couldn't be reached when I HAD to change the DNS, QUICKLY.. I'll pay a little more for Verisign, for the service, and piece of mind knowing they will be there..

OK, why would you want to use a domain registration company, and not register it by yourself?

How do you register a domain name yourself? I'd REALLY like to know. THey do things differently up North ?

Anyway, I'd recommend GoDaddy also.

Yes, supporting crappy companies seems to be a trend on Anandtech.

Because to have access to registering domains, ICANN requires you to submit an application outlining your business plans and then pay IIRC $50,000 for an application fee. Without having permission from ICANN, you simply can't register domains (at least in the standard top-level domains). Even that ripoff price of $100 is cheaper than $50,000 that you'd have to pay to do it yourself.

I can reigster any .ch domain (for Switzerland) at switch.ch. And I mean, .com aren't necessarily American Domains so I'm sure I could somehow register a .com domain WITHOUT paying $50,000.

Just checked out the ICANN page, holy moly, seems like the stuff changed quite a bit since I last registered my domain. (3 or 4 years ago)

the thing is there are cheapie registration services that have been there as long as they could have been (when they allowed other companies to be registrars). so i think they are a fairly safe bet... companies like joker.com
