What kind of acne was this?

I remember a few years ago I had what turned out to be some weird kind of acne on my chin. I had a goatee then, and in one spot it seemed like there was one hair that was darker, thicker and stiffer.

I let it be for a few days, but finally I just grabbed some tweezers and gently pulled. It came out, around an inch long, followed by an inch of semisolid pimple pus in a zigzag strand. What was it?

Thanks. That makes sense. I didn't think it was an ingrown hair (as one friend suggested).

EDIT: I just Googled and it looks like they might be the same thing?

It came up after band practice last week, one of the guys has a huge zit that's come to a head just to the left of his mouth. We all got to the bar before him so before he arrived we were talking about it and how we would normally pop those.

Sorry, but I didn't have a camera handy five years ago.
