Artists. Otherwise if you work really really really ridiculously hard and build a foundation for people who can't read good, maybe you have a chance.

Plumber. All other technologies pale when compared to modern plumbing for improving the health and wellbeing of the populace.

In most technical fields (engineering, architecture, etc) you aren't going to make a direct impact on anyone unless you're some kind of superstar. Most likely, nobody will know you exist or that your work is a part of their lives.

If you want to directly make a difference, you need some kind of person to person job like social worker or nurse.

Come on now. Making "a difference" in the world has little to do with what job you choose and all to do with how you approach that job. Certain profession are considered more noble than others (firefighters, polic officers, doctors, etc.), but where would the world be if we didn't have garbage men, sewage engineers, and janitors to make a difference?

Yeah, like people that work fast food and crap. That would suck big time... but it's so nice they are there at 1 am making food for your drunk ass.

Dictator if you must make a difference in the world... Otherwise, there are too many barriers to actually get a lot done in a lifetime. Aim lower, make a difference for just a few people by being just about anything; even a bum can make a difference to some.

What kind of difference do you want to make? Doctors, nurses, cops, firemen all make obvious differences in people's lives, but engineers, scientists, even construction workers can make a difference through proper (and safe) application of their trades. I suppose even pornstars could be considered to "make a difference", albeit not necessarily in a good way...:p

Unless you're good at IT/Technical/Programming type work. Then you should be more worried about your job being shipped to India than whether or not it makes a "difference" or not :)

I would think that any action you take in your career makes a difference to somebody. So, with that being said, just do whatever you want to do.
