What sort of career paths are available for someone who wants to make a difference in the world? I can name a few myself, but I was hoping for input from you all.

Lawyers often deal with the biggest problems people face in their lives. Most people don't get one unless things are looking very bad.

Or to make a really big difference in the "world," you can be a brutal dictator of a totalitarian state.

Everyone makes a difference in the world, though the differences change between careers. Be a little bit less general.

lawyers are also the ones who back lawsuits that try and reward people for a lack of personal responsibility (fat kids vs. mcdonalds, for example)

Supreme Court Justice
Joint Chiefs of Staff (real talk)
Billionaire Industrialist
Inventor (you need to come up with a truly disruptive technology and, you know, implement it)

I am a person who values technology over just about everything else and thus my opinion is skewed towards it.

If you're on some hippie feel good flowers and sunshine shit you might as well forget it. Baby boomers are overrated.

Invent something?

Chemical Engineering - Some kind of reaction leading to a cure to something?
Electrical Engineering - Something helpful for the disabled / handicapped?

the list goes on.

I am currently getting educated in both architecture and architectural engineering. I have done very well so far in school. After recent conversations with many professionals and professors about what the work world will offer after graduation (not just related to the recent slow down in the economy), I am considering leaving this current course of study. I always wanted to make in impact since I was kid, and fell in love with the idea of creating buildings. Now, I know differently. I have considered possibly pursuing a degree in finance or a related field in the hopes that will receive an education that will allow me to make a greater difference. I would have a much wider range of possible occupations ranging from leading a not for profit, or possibly starting a small consulting firm that focuses on showing businesses sustainable practices that also improve their bottom line. I can think of a bunch of possibilities.

None of this is set in stone and I know that would be putting myself at a disadvantage by starting over.

Do you all have any suggestions?

Also I apologize if my original post was to vague.

A girl I went to college with was obsessed with microfinance and pursuing an economics degree. She had done volunteer work in Peru and the Philippines while doing some study abroad programs.

In any federal government job you're serving all your fellow Americans, in a city job you can serve your fellow city-zens, etc. Generally in those civil service jobs you're possibly giving up higher private sector salaries.

Mmmm. Architecture eats peanut butter and dick sandwiches. I heard that even senior level architects make like 65 a year and the only real money is if you become famous and open your own firm.

While I can't pick a career for you, I'd recommend taking a semester or summer to do some volunteer work (preferably abroad) and see if this is what you really want to do.

Forget the feeble advice here. Social worker, hahaha.

Mathematics and Computer Science, this is the path towards compounding global improvement. It's not for many people, but you did ask.
