What keyboard do you use?

Hey guys,

I looking for a cheap new keyboard. It's going to be for gaming and everyday typing. I've done some research and like the MS comfort curve 2000 and logitech media elite so far. Does anyone have these keyboards or recommend a different one?

Thanks,
Darren

I use one that I bought at Fry's for $1.99, about 3 years ago. Good thing I bought a second one, not expecting them to last very long, huh?

I REALLY like the Logitech Media Elite keyboard. All the different shaped programable media keys are great. I use it at work and do not have one icon on the desktop, or in quick launch. I use the G-15 at home. Its nice. I love the back lightlighting on the keys. I don't like that the extra keys as they are all the same. I never use them because there's no "feel" to them.

I use microsoft's ergonomic keyboard 4000 which you can get for $30 now or if you are creative with price matching I think you can make $6 (check hot deals thread for more info).

I use Logitech MX Duo set, works well for over 3 years now:

Paid 70 bucks for it.

It's one of the most popular Logitech keyboards ever.
KB+mouse not cheap, but maybe kb by itself will be affordable.

Same, love the keyboard, but one thing, this keyboard isn't made for gaming.. sucks for MMORPGS. Haha

I have a Saitek eclipse... Got it because it was on sale...

If I was to rechoose again, I would get a flat keyboard instead of a bulky one. I preferred the old imac keyboards... The apple pro keyboard just doesn't feel the same...

I am a new Logitech Media Elite user. Still taking some getting uesd to the End key being above the pgup/pgdown keys. I use Home, pgup/down and end A LOT. For the first 2 weeks, I was hitting the wrong key constantly. I'm better now.

I don't play games. Just web stuff. I like the built in Calculator and programmable keys. Mostly I use the media keys to pause and control the volume quickly. Where I have my speakers placed it's at least a second to adjust the volume. I can hit the mute key in a 10th of a second.

i use an MS Internet Keyboard. not ergonomic but really comfortable. i can type blind pretty fast on it. was real cheap back in the day. (3 years ago i think) i'd lean towards MS keyboards. what MS lacks for in software, they make up for in hardware. i really like my ms keyboard.

I went through so many combos to finally settle down on a mismatched pair:

Microsoft ergonomic 4000 keyboard + logitech mx1000 laser mouse.

Thanks alot for the replies guys. 😀

I already have an nice mouse (mx1000), so combo's aren't necessary. Some of the recommendations are very high priced. I'm going for 30 dollars, preferably less. I'm really leaning on the logitech media elite right now, does anyone have more info on it or other keyboards in my price range?

Yes, the keys on the Logitech UltraX are low-profile laptop-style keys. Also, that pic from Logitech's site is misleading; the Enter, \, Backspace, etc. key layout in the corner is standard on the actual product (at least, the one I got) -- that is, the enter key isn't two keys in height, only one key like on most keyboards, and the backspace key is its standard width.

I really love the keyboard, and strongly recommend it!

[EDIT] Here it is on NewEgg for $14.99 plus $4.99 shipping, for about $20 total!

I have a Labtec media keyboard. $17-ish from amazon. It feels a little cheaper but it isn't bad for the price at all, and has all the hotkeys I wanted on it (internet keys, media keys, plus a couple others). Works with games too (no limitations on key combinations that can be pressed at once that I've found). And, the best part is it has the normal layout for the arrow keys and has the insert key! I'm so tired of finding keyboards without the insert key, whose idea was it to get rid of it?

Buy it now, thank me later.

Is this one the one you speak of? If so, are the keys low profile like a laptop keyboard?

Yes. It's basically everything I like about the looks and feel of a laptop keyboard with the layout and space of a normal keyboard. Very highly recommended. Plus obligatory media shortcut keys along the top, apparently. I never use them 'cause I always forget they're there 😛.

Two of my friends physically remove the insert key from their keyboards. Personally I hate the thing.

I am using Wireless Optical Desktop 3000. This is the wireless version of the Comfort Curve 2000.

However, the build quality is kinda suspect. Most of the keys have a very muffled tapping sound (GOOD!), but a few keys, notably the spacebar and calculator keys have very loud thuds! If you can live with a loud spacebar, the keyboard's quiet and comfy to type on.

Then you've got a hole in it which looks bad. What is wrong with the insert key 😕

Hitting it accidentally when typing (and using backspace) tends to turn overwrite on, and I really hate overwrite. Besides, there's very little else it actually does I can think of (other than Shift+Insert which we have Ctrl+V for).
