I use different jackets depending on the weather.

If it's 40-50 and rainy, I'll probably wear a windbreaker.
If it's 45 or below and no bad weather (maybe snow though), I'll probably wear a fleece.
If it's 40 or below and rainy (maybe snowy), I'll wear a heavier weight rain repellent coat.

Link to some good ones, then. I'd prefer something in the $150-300 range.

I spent $200 on a Mountain Hardware jacket at EMS. It is a shell with a little bit of fleece i nthe front pockets. I live in CT and it has been cold. Not one day have I needed more than the jacket. I typcially wea a t-shirt and dress shirt under it on my way to work. It is not anything like the 10 year old EMS jacket that I had stolen from me that cost me $250 in 2000. But cosnidering that jacket would be over $300 today, I feel as the the mountan hardware jacket I got for $200 was very fairly priced.

Sadly, I do not remember the model name. Let me look for hte thread where I talked about all this.

One of these:

I usually wear a hoodie underneath when I'm going to be outside for more than a few minutes. It's awesome at keeping me warm, and letting me keep full motion of my arms (I've never liked wearing heavy coats, they're too heavy and I feel like my arms can't move enough). Yeah, sometimes the sleeves of whatever I'm wearing get wet, but *shrug*.
