Carhartts are great. Warm and durable, but not everyone's style. For the cold/rainy season, I just wear a warm sweatshirt underneath some cheap black hooded shell I got from either Land's End or LL Bean years ago.

I usually wear my peacoat or leather jacket in the winter.

For rain: Depends on the temperature. 50s and above, probably a windbreaker. Below that temperature, just my old Columbia winter coat (it has a water resistant outer shell). Plus I use an umbrella when it rains.

For snow, either my wool peacoat or my Columbia winter coat.

I'd get a goretex shell and insulate underneath it. If you become so active that you need to get down to your base layers and unleash the pit zips then go ahead.

I just got this Columbia jacket for the wife along with this fleece.

I've been wearing a GoreTex L.L.Bean shell for over a decade. It has a small tear on the elbow but I don't care. This stuff is your potential life-support system so think over your purchase carefully.

topcoat/peacoat for cold weather and i guess snow.
trench for rain.
If you're not working in an office carhartt is supposed to be pretty good. I'd get something like you listed if I was working outside.

for snowboarding i have a 686 that's pretty beast.

shouldn't he get a GOOD jacket though?
:)

I'm not exactly climbing K2 on a weekly basis, but my Northface gortex shell has held up to almost 10 years of (ab)use with very little complaints. What's your definition of "good"?

What is this "snow" of which you speak?

Fortunately, we don't get snow here, other than an occasional "spit" of snow that doesn't stick to the ground. (about once every 10 years)

For cold weather, I have Carhartt jackets and coats that more than suffice. MOST of them are Carhartt "Arctic Wear" grade, so they're plenty warm.

I also have a nice leather "bomber jacket" that has a zip-in/out lining for extra cold weather.

I wear a North Face Windstopper jacket in pretty much all cold conditions. If it's raining in the summer I just carry an umbrella.

I have a Helly Hansen fleece and shell. I recommend getting a separate fleece/shell or at least one you can zip out. I got a really good deal on my stuff at Gilt. Keep an eye out on there.

Rain?

Snow?

What are these foreign things you speak of?

Like it never rains in San Diego...

Granted, it might only happen twice per year, and it's a nice, soft, warm rain... but I've seen it rain "cats and dogs" there before.
