what I've learned from talking to smokers

Most smokers readily admit that what they do is a 'dirty and discusting habit.' When talking to them however, I find that they usually focus on the consequences of smoking later in life. As one smoker put it "Yeah, its a dirty and disgusting habit, but it'll get me through today, even if it shorten my life by a few days later in life." There are several problems with this logic, first off, not only does it affect you later in life, it affects you throughout your entire life. Well, I could go on but I don't feel like it...could someone else finish this for me(I'm kinda sick right now).

(No, I don't smoke!)

C'mon...the first 4 replies are nef replies! Thats friggin annoying...this is a serious thread! If you don't have something useful to say then don't say anything!!!!

(Yeah, I know I'm guilty of neffing myself...but I've been trying to cut back)

However flawed the reasoning, the daily consequences are not important enough to make an impact on said smoker. "Future" consequences seems a little more convincing, but they are in the future.

Philosopher,

It might be a serious thread, but it's a topic that has been done to death. Come back when you have something original.

I'm sure he's heartbroken. :)

Sorry about the stinky breath comment, smokers. ;)

Opinions of people that cannot leagally buy smoking products, are null and void. :)

I say, that Id rather not live thoes 7 years im taking off at the end.
Thoes sit in the nursing home, hobbling around wearing depends years.
Thoes sound fun to me. So I can have more time to look back and think of how Im old and going to die. :D

Now, what about advancing medical technology?
How much could it possibly elongate that horrible end of life saga.
Or could it possibly do away with cancer, making all you non smokers jealous you never did ;)

Non-smokers are never going to be jealous they didn't smoke, even if they find a way to make life-expectancy equal. When I was up around 1 pack/day I could feel the effect on my breathing, which is one of the reasons that I quit. I suppose some people have less of a cause and effect felt so immediately, so perhaps they wouldn't be so motiviated to quit.

True. but it was more os a joke,
(ie. the ;) )
I smoke when im bored, when I get bored I get a massive oral fixation.
Actually, more of a smoking fixation, i like drawing smoke into my lungs and exhaling it.
I dont think it gets me through the day, I can live without them.
But I choose not to.
Im a techie, I smoke when I figure stuff out(ie. old term of: Hacking).

Philosopher,

Oh no! Whatever shall I do? I am crushed beyond words. PLEASE bestow upon me your forgiveness, for your opinion is all that which is the sustenance of my life! I beg of you, take pity and grant me a reprieve, else I shall be forced to throw myself upon my sword.

I've noticed that they are well aware of the risks of smoking, but they tend to not want to hear it. They also rationalize their habit a lot.

Oh I know! Smoking and programming was at one time all night adventures when the deadline was looming :p For awhile after I quit I could hardly program at all.

Nothing personal russ
But what is a post with something original?
So many people come around that something will always be posted numerous times. Its not like were looking for the path to enlightenment through threads on ATOT. :D

Philosopher,

They only think that way because big evil tobacco companies have forced them to believe it. Just ask Harvey, he will tell you how it is just a big conspiracy to kill his friends.

It's regrettable smokers harm themselves through their addication (not "habit"). But it's even more regrettable they harm others through their actions (spouses, kids, family, the populous-at-large). Drug use that so blatantly affects others by default should not be allowed in public places. No problem at all with the action in one's own home, though, primarly because I'm not breathing that air.

<< else I shall be forced to throw myself upon my sword. >>

Russ thats been overdone, try using a dimm! Not only is it original, but also a challenge. ;)Hehe philosopher said "validated my opinion".....sounds like talk from someone who has been in therapy. What is the point of the thread anyway? You made a statement more than you asked a question.... So in a similar spirit I'd like to declare:I like cigars. From talking with myself I have determind that Dunhill condados are some of my favorites, although baccarat churchills were mighty tasty too.

LOL!
nonsmokers are funny ;)

Yes, smoking cigarettes is the most horrible murderous thing on earth. How dare we kill you like that. All our smoke combined doesn't hold a candle to your cars, eating habits, etc.

I realize it's difficult for you to understand because you don't smoke - but for most of us smoking isn't a choice anymore. We're talking the most physically and mentally addictive thing there is here - not something like "well, I'm not gonna wax my car today". Many of us would quit tomorrow if it were that easy. But definitely not for you, but for ourselves.

People *including you precious non-smokers* are getting drunk beyond reason hopping in their cars and killing people directly, and yet you get in our face about a little extra smoke in the air over what you, your jobs, and your government are putting out. Get over yourselves, seriously.

Soybomb,

I have a REAL Cuban here that a friend brought back from a cruise.
The little sticker says:

Cifuentes Y Cia
Partagas
Habana

Is that a good one?

my writing TA once had to take a break...told us all how he would love to quit...but said something about...being that he will die of polution...poor water...cars and other environmental affects ... and side-effects from something he can't prevent...he goes on saying htat he is taking control of his life and is killing himself slowly...with his own will...and said he'd only lose a couple of days...but i think if he had to take 5 on teaching to smoke...he's gonna get cancer or something...
smoking is a real turn off too.. grrr...and i try to get away from smokers...i hate it when you walk to class...with blue skies and a great day..all sunny...and than all of a sudden the guy in front of you lets out some smoke...gets in your eyes or ... that smell...hmmmm

pisses me off ...
