What ISP to get? cox@home or speakeasy 1.5/128?

speak easy is a WAAAY better isp. but cox@home is cheaper and faster at full speed. i had cox when they where beta testing and they kinda sucked "2 years ago". But how are they now? I have mindsprinf dsl now and they are the worst isp on earth, so i want somthing better.

also can i hack a cable modem to work with cox? if so what modem is the best for doing that and is it a pain in the ass?

cox would run about $35/m +modem cost
dsl would run $70/m + possibly modem costs

If you get a Motorola Surfboard modem they are real easy to hack to take off the upload and download caps. Cox wil imediately ban you from their service for life when they catch you which shouldn't too hard if you do any serious downloading.

I was a Speakeasy user for the past 6 months, but when I moved, I had to switch to Cox.net (formally Cox@Home). I can say without a doubt, that Speakeasy was a better provider in the fact that they provided more services for your monthly fee. I am one that loves to have a fixed IP address. Speakeasy will provide that to you. If you want to go with Cox, you will need to talk with the Business Services department. You will end up spending $600 for a 1.544MB U/D connection. Plus, you will not be able to access your POP account unless you are connected to the COX network (or you can access it via thier Webmail service, WHICH IS UNSECURE!). There NNTP servers suck, whereas Speakeasy's news servers are fast, reliable, and you can access them from the outside. They don't provide you with dialup if you need it while roaming outside the Cox network. Speakeasy will.

As far as speed, I cannot ding either one. Both provide exceptional speed and reliability.

The only problem I had with Speakeasy was the billing. They always told me that my payments were late, even though I sent in the payments 2 weeks before they were considered late.

Just another note, if I didn't mention this. I had the ADMIN DSL service, as this provided me with everything I mentioned above.

If price is a concern, then I would go with Cox. If not, then Speakeasy is a much better choice.

Cool ill go with the gamer package for the free gf4mx card. the guy on the phone said the diffrent names for the diffrent accounts are just to catch everyones eye and that all the 1.5/128 accounts i was looking at where the same exact service.

Not a problem. I have just heard others out there bashing Speakeasy, and wanted to chime in with what I have experienced. Not everyone is going to have the greatest experience with an ISP. You should enjoy the service. BTW, how far away are you from the CO? I was a little over 8000ft. and I was getting pretty damn close to 768Kb/s consistantly.

Also, during the time I had service, I never experienced an outage. Doesn't mean that you won't, but Speakeasy keeps all of there hardware up to date.

Another glowing review of Speakeasy - I've had them for over two years, and love it. I just have the 608/128 (I think), and consistently get ~500kbps. The static IP is very nice (I signed up when you still got 2 static IPs for the basic plan, so I still have them).

I think they're still giving free months for referrals, so LizardMan if you feel like it, get Shadow's Speakeasy ID and refer to it when you sign up, and he'll get a free month.
