If a girl gives you her number, she wants YOU to call HER. If you get her machine, it doesn't count. She's not going to return your call because she (doen't want to come on too strong/isn't that kind of girl/wants to be romanced/whatever).

Call her again. It's YOUR job to ask HER out. Remember that scene in "Kate and Leopold" about the ball being in his court? That's the idea.

(Didn't see that movie? Hmmm.. maybe I saw it because I had a girl who took me to see it... and I had a girl because I called HER. Make a trip to Blockbuster.)

yeah that is what i was thinking reading this thread... there isn't one set of rules for every situation a girl gives you her number

Any girl who is like that is way too high maintenance for me. Sure you'll get the date if you keep calling, but she'll make you do her laundry, wax her car, walk her dog, etc. Am I wrong?

Besides, all girls have caller ID, so I think the answering machine or any time you call her *does* count. How embarassing would it be knowing they see your name in their caller ID log 20 times before finally reaching them.

It depends on the situation. Some girls are exactly like we want them to be - if they give us a number, they want us to call. These women are a blessing upon men, for their brevity and honesty.

Once or twice, I've also gotten the opposite - the girl who only gives you a number to shut you up (i.e. pager, cell, etc) or to avoid humiliating you. A variation of this also happens with female friends who are in deeply committed relationships (not complaining as much here, simply because they do have a single person that takes precedence over all else), variation meaning where you have an actual number that you can reach them at and they'll fail to call back for a few days.

The girl who keeps stringing you along with excuses like BD231 describes is one that you don't want to get involved with. The girl like Noggin describes is exactly what you want. Thing to keep in mind is, you always have to call first.
