<< 1280 x 1024
At work, I'm amazed at how many people run 800 x 600 or even 640 x 480 on 17in+ monitors. Pet peeve of mine.
>>

1024 x 768

yeah it bothers me too to see people running 640 x 480 on big monitors

How can people stand 800x600 and 1024x768, there is simply not enough real estate.

Hmm almost nice bell curve

Unfortunately I think this group is a little more hep than the average user
and most web sites are designed for 800 by 600 ( I'm not talking geek sites, now)
I guess it depends on who your intended market is :D

That said, I don't think the audience here is indicative of the general internet population. Anandtech Forum people are mostly geeks and/or technojunkies.... so... the resolutions are probably higher (on average) here than the average internet user.

That said, IMHO, web designers shouldn't be designing based on resolution as the end user is supposed to be able to resize the browser to a comfortable size for them. If you must pick a minimum I'd suggest NOT going over 800x600. I know MANY people who still run in 640x480 resolution, and many OLDER folks who won't go higher than 800x600 on a 17-19" monitor.

good advice :)

As several people have pointed out above, you're not going to get an accurate result here amidst computer junkies. I do a web site in my spare time that gets a couple of thousand hits a day. It's no AnandTech in terms of traffic, but it's probably more reresentative of the real world in terms of hardware used to view it and my stats are pretty close to worldwide compiled stats. About 50% of the people on the web are at 800X600. Figure 22 or 23% are 640X480 and 26 or 27% at 1024X768 or higher. Your best bet is to build primarily for 800X600, but always make sure to preview your pages at other popular resolutions to make sure the design scales well. Anything that looks good at one resolution, but crappy at others is a bad design no matter what because at least 50% of the users are having a bad experience.

1600x1200, made the mistake of designing a website around it once, looked great on my laptop, but everywhere else it sucked. I tend to shoot for a page looking best at 1024x768 or higher, while still being presentable at 800x600. Anyone still using 640x480 can just deal with however the hell the page looks at that resolution as far as I'm concerned.
