I recognize both meanings of the word. But I choose the 2nd option because that's what it means to the general population. To use the other meaning with them would be counter-productive and elitist.

hackers are people who tries to understand fully the how and what of any system, then will use that ability to modify to something that they please. For example, you'll have system X with capabilities 1 2 3 4 5, but if you combine capabilities 4 and 5, or take out 3 and 2, system X will be better.

hackers can be good and bad. again as amny of u have already said, if they hack the os, it is good. if they steal, it is bad. but just think
about it like this. as i am sure that none of u get viruses cause u know the 'net, the hackers who find the endless bugs in windows do give
a lot of people work to make updated every month atleast. so while i sympthize with those that have gotten hacked, it al depends for wat it is.

A hacker is someone who has a great programming and networking knowledge base who seeks entrance into other people's computers or networks for malicious reasons.

well depends on how you look at it. a hacker is a term used for all of those things mentioned in the poll. the games hacker is iffy. i'd tend to call him more of a hack user than a hacker.

i've read a lot of books about hackers (the cuckoo's egg and hackers are good books) and term has definitely been changed or maybe abused over the years.

i believe it started back in the 60's or so at MIT. It was used to describe people who really got into the electronics or computers or phone systems and really tinkered with them, had to know everything about them and was able to manipulate them. it had nothing to do with breaking into computer systems and stealing money or info originally.

its been a few years since i read those books, so i might be a little off but i think thats pretty close.
