I'm sure you've heard of the word "hacker" before. What I'm curious to know is what is your opinion on the matter.

someone who values knowledge...and will spend a lot of time figuring out how things work

the people who hacked quickpar are probably just script kiddies...they don't count

Hackers are the top-end of the Hardware/Software food chain, beyond even the designers and developers. They're the people tasked with actually solving all the miniscule (yet oh-so-critical) problems in the original design. Completely thankless and unknown - and yet they rule the entire damned world. And they DON'T attend DefCon.

hackers are people that educate themselves and find ways to improve upon software/hardware

Now what they do with that knowledge can be legal or illegal. Hacking the OS registry to make your OS run more efficient makes a good hacker. Hacking and taking advantage of a games flaw can be viewed as good and bad. If the hacker uses it to cheat, than its bad. If teh hacker uses to make software developers aware of the exploit so that patches can be made.... thats good.

Hackers who steal credit card info and such should be dealt with harshly.

You obviously don't care what a hacker really is, so eat me. Go read some history about the hacker culture and then come back later.

The term properly corresponds to none of the above. Thank you idiotic mass media for mucking up the translation.

I know more about them then you might realize. However, I got lazy with the poll.

Have you ever read the hacker howto by ESR?

Have you read it? Do you realize it is a state of mind, rather than a skill? Albeit, some hackers have amazing skill, but your poll shows a complete ignorance to the term and it's origins.

I would have prefered you to link here, instead of making this thread that only promotes the absurd views of mainstream society.

yes I have read it. And like I said, I got lazy with the poll. Closest example I could think of was "software developer/ IT guy" which pretty much simplifies the entire concept. Those who go in it for the love I would consider hackers.

Mainstream views? I never promoted anything. All I asked was folks opinions. If that is what you thought this thread was about (promoting misleading concepts of what a hacker is), then you completely misunderstood the idea behind it.
