I guess I'll have to stay with the boring answer of Doom.
Silent Service 2 and Bass Champ both make the top 5 though.

Half-Life (TFC) - I still play TFC few times a week for my clan. My favorite OLD game are the Police Quest series, I didn't like any of the SWAT games though.

For my top game of all time:

Xenon 2 Megablast from the Bitmap Brothers released in 1989. The best vertical-scrolling shooter EVER! To this day the song haunts me. Just won't get out of my head. If you have time, check it out : it's Megablast by "Bomb the Bass" .

Some other favorites:
Elite,
Civ I,
Doom (of course),
TFC 1.5 (actually not an oldie, still sold in stores),

Well, obviously, my Nº 1 is HIDDEN&DANGEROUS, it´s fantastic!!!!

Need For Speed 4 (I still play it, but it CAN HAVE HIGH REQUIREMENTS STILL NOW, if you download new cars ( jpracing.racerplanet.com ) such as the HIGH POLIGONS ONES. and play it in a two players race with ALL THE HIGH DETAIL.

Grim fandango is great, and Age of Empires too.
In order to play a two players game in real time, RETURN FIRE is a must.

TOCA 2 touring cars is also excellent.

PD: The ones who have a powerfull rig, can test NFS 4 with the full grid high polys cars, and race a split screen with a friend, and see if you can get 30 FPS.
The renault Clio, Megane, VolksWagen Gol, Fiat 125 and Peugeot 205 are one of the most heavy, in order to test.
I still play NFS4 with my father, and it´s really fun.

King's Quest IV (Perils of Rosella) holds a spot just because it was the first PC game I ever spent a good bit of time with, and I even wrote to Sierra's snail-mail hint address a few times to help me out with some of the puzzles. Ever wait 4 weeks to get a response on how to get past a spot in a game? Also, The Humans and the Quest for Glory series ate up many hours in front of a computer screen. All the Lucasarts games, chiefly The Dig were great games as well.

Of the more recent games, why has no one mentioned Fallout! Too new maybe?

My old time all favorite.... Quake 2 I still play it online all the time. CTF rocks. As for single player, Half Life, and Unreal( graphics way ahead of its time) were great.

Betrayal at Krondor

Woot! That one got me into pc gaming in the first place.

Also, how about @#$!ing Gabriel Knight?! (The first one.) Damn, that was a good game. Some of the puzzles were ridiculously hard, but that probably had the best plot of any adventure game I ever played.

And, another vote for Starcraft as well.

I'd have to say Civilization 1, I still played that up untill recently lol prob the greatest classic strategy game of all time, for FPS's I'd say Counter-Strike still holds it own, and although it's not That old Homeworld is still by far one of the most advanced and best RTS's of all time, no one does a 3D rts better.

Very old favorites: Quest for Glory, Gabriel Knight , Monkey Island, Broken Sword etc etc.. Wing Commander and X-Wing/TIE Fighter are up there too.

The game I think I got the most out of was Quake2. I played Q2CTF for years.

Best old game huh?
I'd have to say Blood or Doom. Both are classic old time games. I remember blood was the first game I ever bought. Yeap, I played that on the 'ol 233Mhz... Now I play it on my g0d computer, 2200+. Just as good as it was back in the day, accept for some sound problems. :(

How old are we talking here? :)
I used to get to play Number Crunchers on the MAC we had in the classroom in elementary school. :)

I liked Dune II a lot back in the day; it got even better once I got my first soundcard.

I guess Half Life is old, though I only actually got it maybe a year or two ago. Counterstrike was cool too; I sucked at it from start to finish; when I started, it was maybe 1:10 as my kill:Death ratio; I finally managed to improve it to maybe 1:3 average....I went on a vacation from CS for awhile, but just tried it again. Sooo many empty servers anymore; the few fast ones I found were mostly bot servers. Time to look for a replacement I guess. :(

O.K., I object to any video game released in the last decade being called a "classic." Doom was released in 1993 as shareware. I really enjoyed the game, but give it another 10 years. If people are still playing it, then it's a classic.
