I do my walking at work. I did the walk to errands, stores, and public transit for couple of years while in college. It sucked. It sucked when it rained. It sucked when it was too windy and cold. It sucked waiting for the train and bus in the cold. And when I drove, it sucked trying to find close parking space and then still having to walk a block or two after parking. And paid parking sucks.

I remember having to wait for the bus in -30's back when I was in school, that was no fun. Though there was always that glimpse of hope that there was a snow day but that also meant having to wait longer, until you decide to give up and go home to check. This is before smartphones. Then in college, there was no such thing as snow days, as you took the city bus and those run all the time, no matter what the conditions are.

But yeah glad the days of waiting outside for a bus are over. What really sucked was not the winters, it was in summer when it rained.

I love walking in my spare time, especially to do errands, because it kills two birds with one stone. The only one I really dislike walking for is the grocery store. After sitting all day at work it feels nice to get up and get some fresh air. Love my walk to the train and back every day too, great way to start the day.

Maybe I'll park my car at the end of the neighborhood and mimic this "walk to the train thing" without having to be in a city to do it

I live 1 block from the supermarket, CVS, and park. The beach is about 4 blocks. You still need a car though. Many other areas are too far apart and public transportation sucks. Cabs are expensive.

Bangkok, Thailand: 98

A walkers paradise. Everything is walking distance. Cabs are super cheap. The only thing you have to watch out for are the stray dogs and ladyboys. Both will bite. :)

Walk Score: 27

Most errands require a car.

Yep they do unless you're talking about the little "Main St" area but there's only a few shops there. It's in metro Detroit area but it's definitely a driving area.

EDIT: 27 was for my address. For the city I live in, it's 18, lol. It's true though, in general walking is pretty bad as far as getting to stores (recreationally there's some places to do it).
I would expect ours to be similar. We don't even have sidewalks here.

Sounds perfect. Which urban/suburban areas have you lived in before by the way?

My GF and I visited the area in August to get a feel for it and loved what we saw ... we are planning on going back one more time for snowboarding/skiing next winter and to feel it out some more. A move like that would be my first out of the northeast so gotta take my time about it ;)

Nice, Cambridgeport is a cool area. I looked there with some buddies a few years ago, but everything was a little small for three dudes to share and have enough space, so we ended up in Somerville. Now that I live alone Cambridgeport would be an option, but I'm not paying another stupid realtor fee again. One of the biggest scams ever ...

I told you a few days ago I'd post pictures of my area and it slipped my mind. Sorry about that.

I generated a random album on Dropbox from the last year or so and shared it here. I added a few pictures of my barn because you mentioned you wanted to build a garage. I built that barn almost entirely by myself and it was awful sometimes, but I still loved every second of it. You can see one of my sheds and a few of the retaining walls I built last year. I also threw in the picture of the moose that wandered through my yard roughly two months ago. So cool.

Edit: I noticed there's also a few pictures of my doghouse. It's the semi-subterranean concrete structure. I also ran ethernet and a 120 V branch circuit to it for various things. My kids play in there with the dogs sometimes and I plan to put a few of my spare sensors and cameras in there just for fun. That's why I ran ethernet. The chicken coop has a long range wifi access point that covers most of the property so I can stream Spotify on wifi when I'm driving around in my skid steer. lol.

I love my area because it's literally in the middle of the forest, but I can still get to Target/shopping centers in less than 10 minutes. The interstate is about the same distance. There are places like this all over Colorado if it's your cup of tea.

I can't figure out how my town got such a low score, every thing I need is within walking distance. Grocery store, bar, bank, post office, medical clinic

Living in an "unwalkable" neighborhood used to have its benefits. When I moved in here, I could walk a block or two in any direction and be in open desert. There was only a single paved road between my neighborhood and the Mexican border, a forty mile distance. Since then, developers have puked up 9000 stucco piñatas around me and I have to drive to get to good hiking. The nearest grocery store is ten miles away.
