What is your HD temp?

With all the talk about HD failures particularly with IBM, I'm curious as to what the average HD temps are. You can easily test it with Speedfan. I'm not sure what the testing methodology should be. Idle? Under load? What should be done to heat it up? Defrag maybe? My IBM 60 Gig 60GXP generally runs ~ 33 - 37C.

Good Question I never check just running 7200 IDE drives ...I do know that you can fry an egg on the 15,000 RPM SCSI drives witthout proper cooling

nice wee prog there, too bad my mobo is too old to support it properly!

the temps of my 60gig 60gxp after being on for around 3 hours without much use is 29c, seems ok to me but im hearing more and more horror stories of overheating probs with the ibms so i might grab a hd cooler soon.

my x15 runs quite cool to the touch but I have a cooler for it nevertheless!

Thanks for the post, oldfart. Although SMART has been around for about 5 years, this is the first time I?ve heard it could be used to monitor hard drive temperatures. I have 6 of the suckers in my box, with four 7200rpm drives (including a 75GXP) sandwiched at the back, so I?d love to monitor them.

I did, but I don't know where I'd find the info in there to see the temps... it found both my hard drives, but there's no temperature reading I can find anywhere...

What does the fitness stand for under the SMART tab. My Quantum only has about half of the bar filled while my newer Maxtor has the entire bar filled. Does this mean that I am getting errors on the drive or even worse bad sectors?

nice little program,. loaded it and it worked without configuration for my Iwill KD266 and Seagate 30 Gig 7200rpm Barracuda (26C)

I downloaded and installed it and at idle my IBM 45gb 75GXP is running at 32° Celsius(I have two 80mm fans blowing across it though). It is rather nice that you can have it running in the system tray and format the background/font colors to personalize it. Thanks for the link. 🙂
