options -> preferences -> global hotkeys -> Enabled.
 
doubleROFL - wow...just wow.

media player classic FTMWF (for all my videos) with the combined community codec pack.

winamp (minus ALL of the bloat except for audio) for music.

Been there, done that. Still won't work, it has something to do with the program that runs the hotkeys.
 
i have to shake my head as I say this - I'm honestly surprised these choices worked out the best for me - but here we go:

Music: iTunes
Movies: Windows Media Player 11 w/ K-Lite Codec Pack

iTunes has an unfair advantage over other media players since my gf and I both have iPods. Still, it's easy to use, has a good search feature, can connect to other iTunes on the same LAN (awesome with flatmates and coworkers), and I really can't find anything wrong with it.

As for Windows Media Player 11 and K-Lite, the explanation is surprisingly simple: the combination flat out works. So far, they've easily handled every single movie I've thrown at them and they run fast & smooth. I tried VLC (with its built in codecs) as well as windows media player classic with codecs that I downloaded one at a time, and I always, always would run into a movie that I could not get working. With WMP and K-Lite, that just hasn't been an issue. Feature wise, they are nothing special. But they work, and for movies, that's all I need.

I have a Dell and the hotkeys on the front work with Winamp.

Asus.

It has to do with the program HControl - someone did write a new version of it so that it could be customized, but I've been using WMP11 for more than a year and a half at this point, so it really doesn't matter.
 
winamp.

I stopped using it, though, and I forget why... probably just never bothered reinstalling it after a reformat since I listen to a lot less MP3's on my PC than I used to. I should install it tonight when I get home from work.

If you haven't tried it , I highly recommend it.
Plays all formats, can do video captures, supports directshow filters, streaming, playing of broken files, + more

I stumbled upon it looking for a program that could play video from my capture card and deinterlace.

Its one of the few players that I would actually pay for if it wasn't free.

they only negative thing I ever heard of it from people who compared to zoom/VLC is too many options. Now, how could this be a bad thing for folks on anandtech? it works just fine out of box, comes with easy presets too. I used to swear by gomplayer, but Kmplayer is a clear leader in video playback department. As for VLC, I am very annoyed by the developer's open and utter disregard for subtitle features. Oh, did I mention you KMP supports winamp plugins natively?

FB2k all the way for audio though 🙂
