Gala.

Though from comments in ATOT, it appears I need to check out those Honeycrisps...

Honeycrisps are good, had some monster ones the size of softballs recently, they were GREAT.

I like Gala, but they seem hit or miss between crispy (and therefore awesome), and sort of grainy (and decidely not awesome therefore).

Fuji since they are consistently awesome.

I don't have any trouble picking out the crisp ones, though if I let them sit too long in my kitchen, they can get mealy.

I haven't had that many varieties, but I would say Honeycrisp, Gala, and Granny Smith, in that order.

I like Granny Smith best for cooking (like in pies). The sweet tartness of it makes it excellent.

Granny Smith or Jonathan, but it's about impossible to get Jonathan anymore around here, so I mostly eat Granny Smiths. Get a tub of the Caramel apple dip and it's like f-ing crack, it keeps calling to you until it's all gone.

I'm eating a couple of juicy McIntosh apples right now. Om nom nom nom. :)

McIntosh are the best (and btw, I could swear it's spelled macintosh, I'll have to check the labels when I get home...)

It's not even close. When you have a fresh, ripe McIntosh apple, no other apple can match the flavor.

The problem is that they're extremely finicky. They bruise easily, they don't keep well, and they're only good 11-12 weeks out of the year. If you get a mac apple anytime outside of late September to early December get ready for a mouthful of mealy nastiness.

That's why most of the time I just buy Delicious apples. They're actually pretty crappy apples, but you can buy them in late February and leave them on the shelf for weeks and they're just as good as fresh ones at the top of the season. They're the twinkies of the apple world.
