What is your favorite RTS game of all time ?

So what is your favorite Real Time Strategy Game of all time ? There is just something about this game genre that draws me in.

Maybe it is because you don't have to be in a hurry up or panic mode "like most FPS's" to do something, get somewhere or something like that. They seem to really relax me.

So what all RTS games have you played ? The best ones I have played I will list. If I have missed any "great" ones, please list which game it is. I already have a huge collection of RTS titles, and looking to buy more since most of them have been finished. Even though they have extremely high replay value, at least the ones I have do.

The ones I have played and finished so far is.....

Age Of Empires
Age Of Empires The Age Of Kings
Age Of Empires II
Age Of Empires II The Conquerors
Age Of Empires III
Age Of Empires III The Asian Dynasties
Age Of Empires III The Warchiefs
Age Of Mythology
Age Of Mythology The Titans Expansion
Empire Earth
Command & Conquer "The First Decade"
Company Of Hero's "All Expansions"

The other titles in the Empire Earth series, I am going to pick up, just haven't done so yet.

So what else RTS game have I missed out on that I have not listed and is excellent ? I am sure there are at least a few others I have played but forgot about and didn't list them.

Please list your favorite RTS "game or series" Whether it is already on the market, or yet to be released.

Oh, and I am not too crazy about turn based strategy. 🙂

Would that be Warhammer ? You know I have actually heard about this game before, but have never seen gameplay or tried it.

AOE2+XP

I would love to see story telling done in that same creative and beautifl way.

Never had the same passion for AOE with AOM/AOE3

I completely agree. That is why the replay value with those Age Of Empires games are so high for me. I actually have 3 copies of AOE / AOE II + Expansions for both.

Myth
Warcraft 2
Siege (old game)
Rise of Nations

Age of Mythology

Will be checking these out. If these has the same style gameplay of the Age Of Empires games, I will grab these quickly.

I do have Civilization IV and all the expansions. But Im not too much in to turned based games. Was still a great deal at $9.99 though. 🙂

Rise of Nations is pretty similar to Age of Empires, has more depth with a touch of Civilization mixed in. Far better game than any of the Age of Empires games if you ask me. It's my top RTS.

Company of Heroes was the best non-Age of Empires RTS I've played. Warcraft 3 is also quite good, those cinematics still hold up well after all these years.

Dune II is the best RTS I have ever played. So simple and so much fun. My fave of all time.

Dawn of War 2 is my favourite RTS of recent times.

I would herald Command & Conquer and Company of Heroes as revolutionary RTS games. C&C bringing the RTS game to the masses and Company of Heroes for introducing such mechanics as a cover system, directional armour and supply lines.

Homeworld also deserves a special mention for being an epic game and making 3D Space RTS games enjoyable and viable.

Starcraft 1. 11 years of my life have seen non Stop Starcraft. No game in the history of the world will ever top it.

More recent would be Dawn of War: Dark Crusade with the Firestorm of Kronus mod. DOWII can suck it, POS.

The original C&C.

Got it as a Christmas present the year it came out. The install sequence added to the excitement as I loaded it up. The game lived up to every expectation I had for it.

Starcraft 1 and my liking it has nothing to do with balance either 😛 Amazing customs combined with battle.net and also a cool story give this game unparalleled longevity.

Other worthy mentions are:

- Company of heroes

- Every C&C before generals, everything after sucked

- Starcraft 2, its still got some way to go before it can beat its predecessor IMO, also i didnt like the story
specifically the part about the overmind being good.
It does look like theyre making battle.net 2.0 a bit more like 1.0 with the next patch (adding chat channels) which is on the public test server so thats a step forward too.

C&C, Starcraft 1/2, Warcraft 2/3.

but the one i found most amazing was Savage by s2games. that game was siick. one commander is in 'god mode' with a classical rts view, issuing commands that come down as giant pillars of light, to the individual units controlled by players in fps view.

The total war series. Rome TW, Empire TW, Shogun TW, etc.. the battles are RTS the map is turn based, a bit of a hybrid.

Siege is nothing like Age of Empires and not sure if you can find it. Basically, you are attacking a castle and get to select your units and reinforcements. Action is from top down. Oh, and it's a DOS game.

Found it, Amazon has used copies of it.

Act Of War.
No tech tree as such, at least not like all the other games. You research DEFCON 2 once and always have access to the new stuff no matter what.
The few upgrades that do exist are cheap, fast, and genuinely change the game play. Not of that +1 armor bullcrap. Engaging play no matter how you do it: Early rush, built up and wait, coordinate, free-for-all.

And the single-player campaign is excellent compared to every other one out there.

2nd place would be Dawn Of War. Not because of the strategy but just the awesomeness.

Favorite back in DOS days was Siege. First game I recall that had hundreds of unit types to select from (though they were mostly the same) and also let you have hundreds on screen at one time. Good shit.
