I have heard good things about ATRAC, never used it, but I will have to go with WMA.

None. I only use MP3 and AAC. I guess I'll say iTunes format, since it's just AAC with some encryption thing on top of it.

iTunes/Apple format is called AAC.

I use FLAC on my home computer. Don't use any proprietary formats.

What's that? Would I rather be hit with a golf club, a crowbar, or a tire iron?

No such thing as "iTunes format", its called MPEG2/4 AAC
IMO, an iTunes or Nero AAC is the only file that can even hold a candle to a LPE (LAME Preset Extreme) encoded MP3 at the same bitrate; RA & WMA work fine when mandatory for RMVB and WMV, ATRAC just needs to die.

To answer the question, my favorite proprietary audio format is Apple Lossless, and its not on the list.

Well, the golf club is out. You can get a lot more velocity behind one of those things than the other two.

The crow bar and the tire iron.. I suppose it depends on the size. I would rather be hit with the average tire iron than the crow bar, just because it's smaller.

Oh, and WMA.

There is almost no reason to use anything but lossless compression such as FLAC when media is as cheap as it is.

There are some personal music players that support FLAC. I don't know which.

I think wma is okay, when not DRMed. I have never used ATRAC, DRM angers me (iTunes), and RealAudio makes me sad.

Anyway, I use FLAC most of the time, so I really don't care that much about proprietary formats.

ogg or ape

ape is lossless codec so size is much bigger than those mp3 or ogg, but I'd rather buy bigger HD and have ape

I've done listening tests and to my ears both aac and atrac can beat the best MP3 for the same filesize. Hovever I can say the same about vorbis, and vorbis isn't limited by crappy software, etc.

But my archive is in flac. I'm thinking of converting to one of the more hardcore wavepack settings to free up some space, though. I just don't know if I have the processor horsepower to do it. Maybe once I get my woodcrest setup.
