confused... how is the non-is much better than the IS version?

from sharpness tests i've seen, these are equivalent lenses...

if anything the 70-200 f/4 is sharper than the 70-200 f/2.8 is or non-is but from what i've seen the 2.8 is / non-is are the same.

with that said...

my favorite is also the 24-105 f/4L

i'm contemplating trading it for the 24-70 f/2.8L

I'm pretty sure he must've been joking.

hope so! but you never know :)

18-135mm Nikkor.

It's also my only lens ;)

I had a play with my bro's 80-200 f2.8 and it's an absolute ripper of a lens...

Yeh, I have never seen anyone call the 70-200IS crappy and really mean it. However, there are less optical elements in the non-is version so it does win out in the sharpness category. Although in many cases you would have a hard time noticing. The non-is also wins out in the weight category. Owned both at one point and never used the IS so I sold that version for the non-is. If canon get make an IS lens for under $200 they should be able to add IS to the 70-200 without the $500 premium!

For me, it's a tie between the Tokina 12-24 and the Nikon 50 f/1.8. I've captured many a pleasing image with both lenses. :)

My favorite lens is my Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

Its the perfect everyday lens for me and has allowed me to capture some amazing shots.

My 50mm f/1.8 is a close second, but the awkward fixed focal length limits its usefulness to me.

The only lenses I have experience with are the Nikon 18-55mm kit lens, Nikon 50mm f/1.8, and a Takumar 50mm f/1.4 (old lens on my Pentax Spotmatic), so I don't really have a lot to choose from. I'll go with the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 because it has yet to disappoint :)

I have a semi-funny story about the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8

First chance to test out the lens, took it to the London Museum, problem is the focal length is a bit hard to use in a museum. I kept knocking into artifacts and display cases as I kept backing up to get things in the shot. I must have set off a silent alarm once or twice as they kept coming up to me and making sure everything was ok :)

I went to my university's art museum yesterday and had the same problem :p There was a really cool structure I wanted to get a shot of that was in the middle of the floor, and I was getting eyed pretty closely by the guards as I kept backing up closer and closer to some 400 year old wood carving statue thing
