I give to the local hospital. Of course the medical system is different up here.

I stopped giving to the United Way as a lot of money goes to admin and they sometimes give to causes that I'm not crazy about.

I'll probably also give some cancer foundation this year.

We give money to american causes too. Personally, I feel the United Way is a HORRIBLE way to go. They collect money and then give it out to local charities. This in itself is not a bad thing, but it is incredibly inefficient and huge amounts of money go wasted. Giving directly to a local charity (that doesn't waste a lot of money on fundraising and/or administration) is the best way to go to make YOUR money do the most good.

The United Way has a pretty good track record for not wasting money actually. I'm not trying to convince you to donate, but they are not in fact inefficient.

I agree that you have the most control over your donation by giving to a ground-level charity though.

An example of a charity we like to fund is: The Smile Train which fixes cleft palates for free in 3rd world countries. An added bonus is the charity's administrative costs are paid for by a couple of high profile donors, so all additional donations go straight to the cause...

I cannot name a better charity than Hospice.

The care and services they offer the terminal ill is simply amazing...

All drugs, hospital bed, at home nursing care, emergency visits (ambulance), grief counseling for a year afterward.

Just amazing. My mother was a volunteer and now I know why.
