What is your favorite afordable wine?

I'm pretty new with selecting and drinking wine, so I'm just kinda open to ideas.

So far, my favorite affordable wine is Little Penguin Merlot. It can be had for roughly $7, but it tastes quite good to my inexperienced palate. Has a slightly vanilla aroma, very cool.

So I'd like to know what some of YOUR favorites are. GO!

I'm far from a wine connoisseur, but I like pretty much anything, be it sweet or dry.

Of the cheap wines I've tried ... I kinda like lots of the Gewurztraminers and Rieslings. I haven't really decided upon a favorite brand in particular though. But, if you want something lighter that is good with Chicken or Fish, Gewurztraminer hits the spot 🙂

Nice little review page created by a guy I know from IRC http://www.shoelace.org/wine/

You have a Costco near you? They sell some decent wines in the under $10 range. Every now and then you will find a super bargain there at that price range (91+ rating).

I like Petite Shiraz... Guenoc has one in the 15$ range, but you can get a good one for around 9-10$.

It's a very drinkable red if you find cabs or merlots too heavy for your tastes.

Thanks so far, but I'd like to make it clear that I enjoy wine for the taste... I don't drink it to get drunk, which a couple of you think that's what I'm looking for, lol!

Edro - that looks interesting. I'll have to check it out! And joutlaw, I'll have to admit that I have yet to try a shiraz. That'll probably be one of my next bottles.

Some of my regular purchases

1)hogue late harvest reisling(sweet desert wine) $7-10
2)hogue Cabernet merlot(combination wine, very good with red meats and red sauce pastas) $8-12
3)Gnarley Head red Zinfandel-fruity red
4)just about any malbec from south america(slight smokey red with vanilla overtones)
5)chateau ste. michelle Chardonnay- semi dry-buttery great with pasta, fish, white meat

As far as brands go, I like Yellow Tail quite a bit. It's like 5.99 for the regular bottle and has a decent taste to it.

The best value on a good wine in the market today is, in my opinion, Ripasso. You still get a lot of the great Valpolicella character with some of the Amarone nuance without the price.

I still have not found a good quality ~$10 American wine. They're either overoaked (too much toast, too much tannin) and/or made with grapes that are overripe. The result is a cooked fruit character with toast and vanilla behind it all; it's basically like drinking toast and jam.

Of the cheaper wines that you can get anywhere, the Columbia Valley has reasonable offerings: Columbia Crest, Chateau Ste. Michelle, Hogue and plenty of others, though most aren't readily available. I stay away from cheap Cali and Oregon wines, and definitely away from cheap French and italian wines. New Zealand and Chile have some nice offerings.

Barefoot Cabernet is pretty good.
Dancing Bull Zinfandel I like a lot.
Smoking Loon Pinot Noir is great for pretending you are drinking blood, I mean if you are into that kind of thing. Not like I am. 😛

When it comes to mixing up a wine cooler, don't fuck with anything but Franzia, baby. That shit just sits in the fridge with a spigot ready to spew its sweet nectar all over your ice and Sprite. 😉

But for real wine, Costco has some decent wines for under $10.

~$17: Soracco. This is a very nice Moscato di Asti. Excellent pairing with seafood, has excellent frizzante, lots of peach, lemon, high acidity.
~$25: 2005 Reinhold Haart Piesporter Spatlese. Excellent Riesling, one of the best I have ever had.

These wines are for when you don't want to dick around with a guessing game (dinner for two, etc.)
