My favorite engine is Q3A. I like Half-Life the best only because of Counter-Strike mod...

UT hands down. Then comes quake 3.

UT takes a lot of skill, that you can really increase by playing a lot. Quake 3 is pretty similar, but not as much, but its cool for quick fast action if you have 5mins to spare in your day.
