How do you like Mozy? Do you use the MozyHome version? I can't find anything telling you what (or if) the storage limit is.

File server with nightly backups to a usb hard drive that is stored in a fire proof media safe (Safe has 2 hard drives that I rotate between each week in case of power surge that might take out my server) and also to carbonite. Carbonite data is encrypted on the fly when it's backed up and is extremely safe as long as you make your own encryption key, just make sure you don't lose the key or your SOL.

For the photos, sure. What will be taking up space is 1080p video. It's just under 3 hours per 32GB.

wtf

why do you take 1080p video of a baby? Are you doing a real production movie?

I desperately need a backup solution. I don't think I'd lose any monetary value, and I do have backups of simple documents, but it'd be 8+ years of things to lose. For example, I have some old snowboarding footage of friends that is probably long gone from any tape it was recorded on.

I think I'll just do a simple RAID 1 with 1 TB or 1.5 TB drives. Maybe a RAID 5. I forgot the exact details of each.

OTOH, I've never felt like RAID was that great for the average consumer. Maybe I should look into something else.

edit: I'm referring to a backup due to a mechanical or electrical failure of a hard drive. Although it'd be nice to have backups in case of theft, flood, or fire, I'm not sure I want to go that far. At the least, I can keep my document/text backups on flash, remote servers, etc, but I'd lose everything else.

the only thing I'm really paranoid about backing up is my academic papers and other misc writings... and even that, I just burn them to dvd once every 6 months and store the disk at my parents house.

my movies inevitably get spread across different external drives and dvds over the course of moving them between computers, upgrading drives, burning copies for friends, etc... if my main drive were to die, it wouldn't really be a great loss except porn that I haven't watched in years.

It's unlimited.

I use mozy@home and it's not bad, but some people have really bad problems with it. Carbonite seems better.

I think one of the keys to a good backup solution is that it be automated. If I have to manually copy over files, insert and remove blank dvd-r's/USB memory sticks, etc., then sooner or later I'll get lazy and just keep putting it off until it's no longer an effective backup solution.

For that reason, I currently have a batch file that runs every night and does 2 things:

1. automatically syncs the My Documents folder to a remote fileserver via cygwin/rsync
2. automatically syncs other files on my C: drive to a mirrored backup drive using Vice Versa Pro

Basically, 1. is for documents and other small files, and 2. is for larger files like music, pictures, videos, etc.

I can guarantee you that your kid is never going to watch the videos. When is the last time you (or your folks) sat down and watched 8mm videos of you as a kid?

Might as well make it an animated gif, for the amount it will be used... easier to backup that way too.

My parents had kids and they have maybe ten photos of me as a child, if that at all now. All of which were done at a business.

I plan to take maybe a few pictures. Definitely no where near 1TB. Maybe 1MB, and then print them.

It's okay, because some parents actually love their kids.

I think the OP has too much free time. :-| Less taking care of the child, and more pictures.

What do you say to the people who can barely make it by then? People who are just making rent and such. Who do not have luxuries?

Yeah, you're a fucking idiot.

I'm the idiot? As far as I can tell, you're the one who thinks he knows more about parenting and children than the parents here. And as far as the argument for people not having money for luxuries... I wasn't talking about that. Also, your parents are probably not those kind of people either judging by the fact that you have a house, computer, internet, and no job, and your parents seem to be supporting you just fine. Your point is moot.

A bottle of leftover tylenoll-3 and a sixpack.

I've been telling myself to back my shit up for years, but I still haven't. The laziness is strong with this one.

You really are stupid. My parents worked their asses off to get to where they are now. Do you really think people financially stay the same for almost 20 years?

Anyways, back on topic. My parents lost most of the pics of my sisters and me in a fire. To me, printing pics for storage and archival purposes is a waste of money and space.

Did you start it? I would understand. I would burn all the pictures too.

:p Why not put them in a storage place where there is no electricity and it is only stone?

EDIT: It probably would cost less to print them out than back them up online.

Of course not. My parents worked hard to get to where they are now as well. I can't believe this shit went this far... I was making a damn joke... holy shit.

I have a server I back stuff up to, but if I want to keep them then I put them up on Flickr, and flag them as private (unless you don't care about sharing). Costs $20 a year or something, and if your house burns down with all of your rigs in it you still don't lose them.
