If AMD doesnt get their act together this will be the first time when i'm ready to swap out the guts(MB/RAM/CPU) that Intel will be the better option all around.

these are the systems i've used over the years in order of CPU power:
  1. 1989ish?: IBM 286 (1st family PC mainly bought for my brother, was still operational but tossed out a few years ago)

    2001: IBM 486 (never really used as an uncle unloaded it on us when he moved; it's boxed away somewhere)

    2006 - present: Pentium Pro 266 (i actually found this in my building's compactor room and brought it up. i didn't know how old or what the specs were when i took it up, but i figured i'd try to make use of it as a linux toy/box. only plugged it in once to check out the specs and saw that the previous owner didn't even bother to format his hard drive.)

    1999 - 2001: P3 450 mhz (chip is boxed somewhere. my first modern PC as i had used the 286 for menial school reports up until 1999. i never knew why/how, but the system died in 2001, which prompted me to use my brother's P3 700 mhz system for awhile before i got into building my own DIY systems)

    2000 - present: P3 700 mhz (originally my brother's pc until mine died. was in use until 2007 and is currently sitting unplugged at my parents)

    2002 - present: Duron 1 ghz (my first DIY build that was later used by my brother until the mobo died due to leaky caps. i replaced the mobo in 2007 and my parents now use it.)

    2003 - present: AthlonXP 1700+ (currently used as a headless winxp server w/ smb shares)

    2004 - present: G4 PowerPC 1.33 ghz (used daily, in fact typing on it right now)

    2006 - 2007: AMD64 3500+ (chip is boxed away, got this as part of a newegg cpu/mobo combo for $99)

    2007 - current: s939 X2 4200+; got one of the few remaining s939 X2 this past fall when they were on sale at newegg.

Desktop CPU: P133 (An HP Pavilion) -> Celeron 466 (Another HP Pavilion, worst PC I've owned) -> P3 1000 (Dell Dimension) -> P3 1.2 Tualatin -> Core Duo (Mac Mini) -> Core 2 Duo E6600
Completely skipped Netburst (probably a better person because of it) and the K8 generation (just didn't have the money to get a new system during that period)
Notebook CPU: P3 1.13 -> Core Duo (Thinkpad T60) -> Core 2 Duo (Latitude D620)

Desktop GPU: S3 Trio (HP Pavilion) -> ATI Rage 3D 8MB (2nd HP Pavilion) -> ATI Rage 128 Pro 16MB (Dell Dimension) -> ATI Radeon 8500LE -> XFX GeForce 7600GS 256MB

Motorola 68000 (Amiga 500) -> 386SX16 -> 486DX2/66 -> Pentium 133 -> Pentium Pro 200 (dual! and o/c to 233) -> PIII 550 -> PIII 600 (in a desperate attempt to reach 800 stable) -> P4 1.6 -> P4 3.0 (two of them) -> Q6600 -> X2 4400 (Media Center)
