My theory is that this question is meant to test how well you can deliver bad news to a manager, while still making it seem like you're kissing his ass.

When I do a string of calculations, I'll usually make a number of stupid little mistakes, like 3² = 6, or 2x = x, which render the answer completely wrong.
How can something like that be spun?

Actually yes, you can help yourself. That's why they're there. :p

Despite some people seeing it as a BS question, I think it's a really good question to ask.

The point isn't to sell yourself down, the point is so that they know where they can HELP YOU so you can improve and be a better worker.

MY personal answer to this question is that I tend to be very timid around people that I don't know very well. I think it'd be important for a company to know this because if the job involves me meeting new people regularly then they'd either need to keep looking or pair me up with someone that is more outgoing and has no problem taking the wheel.

No matter how you answer this question these people will pick you apart soon enough and figure it out anyway. If you think the question is BS then maybe your answer should be "I have a hard time acknowledging my own problems".

Bottom line is that if you don't know enough about yourself and your work habits to admit and address your faults then you need to grow up and realize that a company doesn't want to spend the time or risk the loss of money or customers in favor of you hiding personality flaws and them finding out the hard way.

I always say that I talk too much, that when someone brings up a topic I'm interested in I really get engrossed in the conversation and sometime lose track of time. Its true too. That And I have a stealing problem :)

That's a Catch 22 though. You'd darn well better follow through with that - if you don't, the interviewer will know that you're a blatant liar, and thus you won't get hired.

Just say "My biggest weakness? Wow... it's so hard to choose just one. Like trying to pick your favorite kid, you know?"

I don't know, killing the interviewer won't get you hired either.

Easy. Say that sometimes you don't spot-check your work as you go and that you're working on being more conscientious about checking as you go, so that you can be more efficient in completing your work.

Here's the best answer you can ever give.

"My weakness? Well, sometimes I get really nervous before interviews so I masturbate in the nearest bathroom before entering the room."

Make sure you shake their hand when you enter.

My weakness is stretching myself thin because of paying too much attention to detail. I need to focus on the core elements of a specific task and move on without getting caught up in the minutia.'

edit: oh and i tend to be easily distracted and eventually annoyed by a workplace that doesn't allow for a long periods of uninterrupted thought / work time.

I sometimes fantasize about killing my co-workers and burying them in my back yard.
But I have it under control now ! Now I only fantasize about killing people that don't hire me.
