Just as many, if not more, companies ask for GPA then filter by that.

source? I applied to over 70 positions my 2nd semester of senior year. only 2 of them, oracle and google, had explicit minimum GPA requirements. FYI, I applied to both and got an interview with oracle anyway...

just my experience....

Meh, I've hired dozens of people and I never look at GPA. Stupidity shines through in cover letters, resumes, and interviews, much better than in College grade point averages, from my experience anyway.

Hiring for a techinical job, Engineering and whatnot, may require putting more credence on the GPA, but for other work that is not necessarily the case.

I've never even put a GPA on my resume and I've never had it come up in any interviews I've done.

So you're saying hiring for any substantive job, you'll obviously need to know your shit. If you're going to be a janitor or a receptionist, it really doesn't matter. Thanks Captain O. ^_^

There is high correlation. If you're saying there is no correlation.. Let's find the group of people who all get 2.0GPA and see how they compare to the people who got 3.9+GPA

And then we can compare the people who went to top schools and got a 2.5 GPA to the people who went to CC and got a 3.9+ GPA.

I guarantee you the top school peeps will have better jobs.

You keep ignoring the question multiple people have asked about your age. Since you won't answer I did a quick search on "trident age", and found a post from 11/09 where you talk about how much money you're GOING to get for college. Are you even out of high school yet? What makes you think you know what companies look for in full time hires?

I think he's getting some sort of full scholarship, due to his dad being in the military, to whichever state school he's attending, not 100% sure though.

Tentatively graduate on Saturday with a 2.6204.

Received a job offer back in October which I start in Mid-June doing very well coming straight out of college.

In my case, two internships with same company >>>>>>>>>>>> gpa. Fuck gpa. I know a whole lot of Poli Sci/History/English majors who graduated with a much higher GPA than me and right now they're fucked.

I'm in an engineering position & I know my shit.

lol @ you if you think that is just because of the schools they went to.

You do realize top schools have bachelor's/master's/phd degrees and those who go to community colleges get at most associate's right? (Unless you do a nursing degree or something) :p Also, there is plenty of other data in that pool that would give priority to rich kids.

Well those degrees probably don't have as much usefulness/job-opportunities in the marketplace right now... >.> That's a stupid comparison... Something only someone with a 2.6204 GPA would say.

seriously trident, come back and talk to us when you've graduated college and found a job, you'll have a better idea of how this whole process works.

3.75 in computer engineering (2008)

Whether or not you agree, most employers (especially medium to large) do look at GPA. Just about every job I looked at or was forwarded in school had a GPA requirement of 2.8 or 3.0, sometimes with preferences for 3.5 and above. Interviewers usually asked and said something like "that's good, we like to see that".

Also for internships it's very important as you don't have a whole lot else usually.

It doesn't guarantee you a job (heck I'm unemployed right now) but I generally recommend at least a 3.0. Even if you're not a great student, I say stay above a 3.0 as it just makes things a little easier for ya.

The cutoff is too high. First of all, a lot depends on whether you went to a great university for your major, or if you went to Community College X or Directional State Z.

A few jobs will throw your resume in the can if it's not above 3.0 regardless, but oh well. I just graduated with a 2.84 from a top 5 university for my major and I'll be making $72,000 starting next week. I'm not complaining.

No, I was hiring for analysts, accounting positions, and other similar things. When I said "technical" I meant more math/science related technical roles.

you'd know more if you were a janitor :awe:

Touche!

Anyway, trident, you keep ignoring when people mention your age or how you know what companies look for. I am going to take this omission as admitting that you do not actually know, you're speculating. That's fine. However, there is no real point in me continuing to debate with you on this subject, and I have my job (that I got with my 2.82 GPA) to attend to, so I'll bid you adieu.

Wow, perhaps ATOT is somewhat honest. No one has picked the 4.0 yet. (hmm, or maybe its because its a little too obvious if you pick the 4.0).
My wife had an A- in one class that ruined her otherwise perfect 4.0

So just because I have a 2.62 overall GPA means I don't know what I'm talking about? That's kinda funny seeing as how a lot of the guys in my major who have better GPAs than me don't have jobs right now. How much real world experience do you have? How many internships have you had? Have you even applied to college? Have you been accepted? Where to? What program?

2.62. Graduate in 3 days. Starting salary of 65k a year. Construction Management. Fuck off.

4.0 is too damn hard. Maybe in-major, but there's always that one random class you get an A- or something in because you didn't care -___-.

And Trident, grades either matter less or as much as you think, depending on your major, relevant experience in the field when you graduate, and networking/interview skills.

Edit: Oh hey rogue, you're about to walk at VT too? Yeah, I know a few ~2.5 GPA kids in my major with offers of 65k+ from... a large technical corporation with three letters and clever commercials. I have multiple offers in the same range, but I have a 3.7+ GPA and no internships (I used the grade as a crutch for my lack of recent experience). So like I said... GPA matters less or as much as you think depending on external factors :p

my brother was the Valedictorian of his class at a top tier engineering college in Chemical Engineering

he only had a 3.99, because he didnt get an A in English Composition(one of those gen ed classes only morons dont get A's in)

further proof the OP has no clue

I'm sure it really hurts him too

maybe thats why he finished his PhD at MIT early....

Aw man...here comes the gpa argument. I graduated with a 3.0....i work with people who got 3.9's at better colleges. Does it matter? In some companies yes.....

is GPA a true indication? No. I have seen plenty of people who got 3.9s in class. Stick them in a lab and they have no idea what is going on because it's no longer nice equations on a paper (which never happens in real life).
