i've heard similar to this by a hispanic, i mean Spanish friend. See, gov't brochures/surveys/ city information flyers almost always label spanish people as hispanics... it's a 'government' coined english term, I take it.

i just thought Spanish meant you're referring to someone from Spain, so Iwouldn't say it to someone who is PR, or Dom, or Mex... so I used Hispanic... but I've changed based on what a friend told me about 4yrs ago.

heh, i actually found that site about 3yrs ago, and emailed the lady of that site and discussed the pernil recipe. i've made it a few times too.

When speaking of "amarillos," we just refer to them as plantains...fried plantains...

empanads with hot salsa... I've had some pretty bad empanads, but there's a local ecuadorian (sp) restaurant that makes them awsomely. 🙂

Next thing you know, "white flour" and "white bread" will have to be pulled off of store shelves everywhere, due to their "inherent racist overtones". (But yet, "black beans" will still be sold in cans. Go figure.)

For the record though, I do dig mexican food, especially "real" mexican food, although I admit some of it is rather strange and unfamiliar too. I don't know which is hotter though, Indian food, or Mexican food. They tend to use difference spices, so the subtle overtones added to the "hot" sensation are a bit different. But if you're unprepared, either one will send you runnin' for the border - the border of your restroom that is. I tried some Vindaloo for the first time at an authentic (well, non-franchise, and everyone working there was authentically indian) place at the mall, which is now closed. I consider myself somewhat of a "hot food" connessiour, but dang, that was one of the first "hot" meals that I've never fully finished. Good stuff!! I was planning to go back some time, but I guess it was too much to handle for your average american, as it was closed down.
 
I love all sorts of Mexican cuisine, however, my Grandma used to make the best huevos con papas y chorizo. Give me a homemade tortilla, I'll give you my fork, and that's the start of a good breakfast (not a burrito, I rip the tortilla apart).
