What is Xvid? I dled some .avi files and cannot view it.

xvid is another video codec like divx. search for it on google and you shouldn't have a problem finding it.

Have you ever used it? I looked it up and got the main page. I just saw that it's an open source code. Didn't really say what I should be installing to get this to work.

Downloading any big codec pack usually always results in lots of incompatibilities. Just download the xvid codec from the site.

I prefer ffdshow... you can get binaries at Sourceforge for Windows. It plays most of the current popular video codecs except for MPEG1&2 and does it quite more efficiently thanks to code optimized for MMX/3DNow/SSE.

I personally think XViD is potentially (if not already) better than Divx, especially now that Divx has gone commericial.

yeah Xvid is totally better now that Divx is going to be full of spyware in the future. I dont notice any difference between Divx and Xvid really. So I think I am going to start encoding with Xvid and see how that goes.

yes i used it. no dont get it from xvids page.

I've done encoding with both for a bit now, and I'm really liking XVid. Might not be the standard yet, but it's certainly got a lot of potential.

And go buy Reign of Fire, you silly leech. "Some AVI files" indeed. 😛 (One of my housemates had the same problem when his pirating arse stole it off Kazaa. "Dude, this movie doesn't work." "Buy it.")

That pack kept crashing my media players, I went back to Ace's pack and have been much happier with it.

for playback yes but you can't encode with it eh 🙂

CODECS PACK SUCK.
Here is it straight from doom9 of www.doom9.org: "You installed the Nimo pack? The Nimo Codec Pack is evil[tm]! Happy reformating and fresh-installing your system! After that, stick with ffdshow or the XviD decoders. Just install the codecs you need, and no bloated packs!"

Install ffdshow, install AC3Filter, install a XviD binary if you encode. THAT'S ALL YOU NEED. STOP INSTALLING THESE GOD FORSAKEN CODEC PACKS AND COMPLAINING WHEN YOUR SH1T DOESNT WORK.

Never had a problem with Ace's pack, have it installed on lots of machines, but the Nimo pack had a really bad bug for awhile where it would crash windows media player.

You can get alternative DivX players nowadays. I've used GDivx and NostraDivx before and they both have a better interface and are more easy-to-use than the standard DivX player. All you need to do to use them is download the standard Divx codec, which doesn't have any spyware that I know of.

a guy i know wrote this program .. GSpot. It tells you which codec an AVI uses and some other information, like if the codec is installed and how large the file should be and if the file is missing some bits. Good program.

dude that's an unstable developer build - dont recommend it

if you need to playback xvid files, install ffdshow, if you want to make xvid files, use Koepi's stable build unless you KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

Really? I'll give Koepi's build a try then🙂

Koepi's stable build is generally accepted as thestable build to have

just a warning, his current developer build is very buggy
