I am trying to help a friend setup a system with a DRV5 and getting nowhere after two nights of trying. We can not get the board to complete a Windows2000 or WindowsXP install. The initial install went fine and the board booted up fine on the first try, all jumpers were setup correctly.
Once we tried to install WinXP for the first time, it went downhill from there. As soon as we got to the disk setup screen and partition the drive, the computer would crash with a BSOD every time no matter what. We eventually got the computer to the point where it would quick format the drive and then give errors when trying to copy files from the install CD and/or report that there was no CD in the drive. It was as if the CDRom was not working correctly. After a few file copy errors and having to click "Try Again", the board would BSOD. The install CD is in perfectly fine and we even tested it in another system. After getting the BSOD about 5 times, we starting troubleshooting and changing stuff...
We tried everything including a PCI video card, resetting the CMOS, changing BIOS settings, booting with only a RAM + video + HD + CDRom, using a different CDRom, replacing the IDE cables, changing the drive assignments, using just one IDE channel, removing the floppy drive, a different BIOS, unplugging and replugging in all cables and connections, reseating the CPU and checking the power supply on another board, trying the PCI video card in different slots, underclocking the CPU, raising the RAM voltages, and some other stuff I am sure I am forgetting. Same problem all the time, the board would also BSOD shortly into the install.
We found a Win2K OEM from an older system and tried that figuring it would work fine. Same problem! Win2K gets to where it should be copying files and starts giving errors saying it can not find the files and eventually crashes with a BSOD. The Win2K makes it to 17% each time with about 10 errors along the way. The Win2K CD is fine as well.
Does anyone have ANY ideas on how we could fix this? We really would like to get the system up and running but we are running out of ideas. System config:
Soltek 75DRV5, latest BIOS
Athlon TBird 1.4
2x256 Crucial PC2100
Western Digital 40GB
LiteOn 16x CDRW (also tried a Sony 32X CDRom)
MSI GeForce 2 GTS (also tried a Permedia 2 PCI card)
*other, current system has no floppy installed, NIC and sound card are not installed, the IDE devices have been tried in every order possible combination, jumpers have been tripled checked, all hardware works on another motherboard we tried.
This has been very frustrating, thanks in advance for any help!!!
