What is wrong with my games

I bought Lego Star Wars 2 back in November, it installed fine but would not start at all. Had to get a no cd patch for it to work.

Then I bought GTA San Andreas last month, it installed fine but also would not start. Again had to get a no cd patch just to make it run.

On Saturday I bought Civ 3, Installed it (it ran fine) then patched it. Now it tells me to put the cd in the drive and try again. The cd is in the drive and I only have one drive so its not like I installed from d: and have the cd in e:. Again needed a no cd patch.

This is on a fresh install of XP, and I tried the support sites but nothing worked. For example for GTA they said delete gta_sa.dat but the file was never created because the game wouldn't even start.

Is it just me or is anyone else having problems like this with games?

Could have something to do with your drive.

Perhaps, but most of my other games work fine.

Yeah...I thought it might be the drive as well. But, why would you be able to install but not play the game...if you have a spare drive around, you might want to try using that.

Do you have any cd cloning software or virtual drive software installed?

If so that is the problem probably. It conflicts with the CD protection for some games.

I don't have a spare drive to test with unfortunately.

I don't have any virtual drive software or anything like that installed either.

Also, Civ 3 is the only game that says the cd isn't in the drive when it is. The other 2 games just don't work, you click the shortcut and the windows error reporting thing pops up saying gta_sa.exe (or lego.exe whatever it is) encountered a problem.
