What is wrong with my computer?

I have an Asus P3V4X Motherboard.
Slot1 P3 800
30GB 7200rpm hard drive

Anyway,

About a week ago, every now and then my computer would make weird noises, they are really hard to describe, almost like a "high pitch reverse electronic scraping noise that ends in what sounds like a beep". It's about a three second noise, and I know it's coming from my hard drive.

So, it starts to make this noise when I was in windows, and it froze up my computer - I could be doing something as innocent as browsing the internet, next thing I know i'm locked up - I press ctrl-alt-del and it just shows me my desktop background and thats it - locked out.

Now, it's gotten even worse, I can't even boot up my computer 95% of the time: I am on a different computer now: These are the error messages:

I get the error messages "Disk Boot Failure"
And after it counts up the RAM, sometimes it will even say "Detecting Primary Master....None"
I went into my bios too, and whenever I pass over the "BOOT" Tab, it freezes my computer without filling out the window. ***.

I ran Disk Doctor, and Win Doctor - and it found no problems, although I noticed it caused it to make the weird noises...I haven't been able to boot up since.

Also, I don't know if this is related, but I have the SoundBlaster Live X-Gamer soundcard, and I use a splitter for it in the back right - so I can have my headphones + speakers. ie: just turn down the speakers to use the phones....but a little bit before this started happening, my speakers went to hell - popping and crackling - and my headphones stopped working alltogether.

Yes - I did take my case apart, retake most everything out, blow it out for dust, put it back in, check connections thoroughly etc, all is fine in that dept. The reason I add this is because I was thinking maybe its the Motherboard and not necessarily the Hard Drive? I really don't know.

Someone can please QA this for me?

I don't have that much money and I am not looking forward to having to replace these parts, but give me the honest answer and opinion to what is going on here.

Thanks in advance, very much.

I'm pretty sure it's the hard drive.

What brand is it and when was it manufactured? It could still possibly be under warranty. I would take the hard drive out and see if another computer can detect it's presence in the bios.
