what is wrong with my car?

At high RPMs ( i'm guessing > 4k, it burns oil. The valves aren't sticking, i would here that. My dad told me that the car is just old and tolerances have increased, but i don't like that explaination since the car is only 10yrs old and has under 100,000 miles on it. My guess is that the rings are bad. I can get them replaced for $120 installed but i don't want to do that unless that is the actual problem (duh!). Am i right, or is it something else.

FYI, its a honda 1.6L four, 1990.

TIA,

That sounds like a correct assumption. Older hondas are known to need piston rings replaced.

Majestic, all Honda engines are known to burn a little oil when travelling over 4k rpm extended time. However, it shouldnt be any more than a quart, I had a civic 1.6L with 240000 miles and burned only about 1/4-1/2 quart after 380 miles drives at 80-90 mph. Your engine probably need a valve clearance adjustment... if you have time and place, you can do it yourself cuz it's very easy. Grap one of the haynes manual for complete instructions. Also check the head gasket but I put my money on the valve adjustment. Good Luck!

mine will burn about a quart at those speeds in about 40 miles. If its a valve adjustment, I could do it w/ pa's help as he's done that b4.

I'd say it's mainly just wear and tear.

And no way can you get rings installed for 120.00, unless you're just buying the parts and doing it yourself.

Agreed with SyahM. I'd check the valve lash first, as that's problebly what needs to be adjusted. If the clearances for the valves check out, then run a compression check to check the rings. Make sure you don't have any white foamy substance in your oil as that indicated a bad headgasket or warped head. If all else fails, check where you park and inspect the underside of your engine to make sure you're not leaking oil. Hope this helps.

That's the price i was quoted from a friend who works at a dealership. He told me that there wouldn't be any labor charge. That's why i wanted to know what it should cost.

Edit: MisterNi: As best i can tell there is no oil leaking from anywhere. Would i look for that foamy substance when i change the oil?

I haven't worked on cars for a while so maybe I'm forgetting something, but how would improper valve clearance cause an engine to burn oil?

Out of spec valve clearance could indicate worn valve stems which would strongly suggest worn valve stem seals. Maybe I should've been a bit more clear. 😱

MajesticMoose, you can actually just check your oil filler cap. If you see a white foamy substance on the cap then you have coolant in your oil.

ok then i know i don't have that problem. Believe me, i spend more time looking at that thing than i would like. On the plus side, this problem has slowed me down alot(i try not to go over 75 and tend to hold 70 well now)

Ok, that explains 120.00 for a ring job. Someone is doing you a favor. Good for you, we should all have such luck. 🙂
