What is wrong with me? I haven't upgrade my base system since '03

NFS4

No Lifer
Hehe, I used to be the upgrade master, but I haven't done a damn thing to my base system (Athlon 64 3200+ and Asrock mobo in Oct/Nov '03). I've added a GeForce 6800GT only b/c my Radeon 9800NP died. And I added a 16x burner, but I don't think that really counts.

Has anyone else put the brakes on their upgrading over the past few years? Just seems as though my system has all the power I need...

Either that, or it just seems pointless to upgrade anymore.

Sounds like my situation too, in fact I've done less upgrading than you have!

My last rig was built in October 2003, I used a 3ghz P4 with Radeon 9600 Pro. I also bought an Apple PowerBook G4 a month later in November 2003. As for hardware, I haven't even bought ram since then! But I've probably spent $2000 on software, books, paper, ink, and toner since November 2003!

Though I must say that I'm looking fowarding to building a SFF A64 GF6800 system soon!

I last built in August 2003, and I replaced my 9700 Pro with a 6800GT last summer, so I'm in pretty much the same position as you. It just seems that advances are coming slower and slower these days - and even though I'm still on a "lowly" Athlon XP (albeit at 2.4GHz), I'm only now starting to think about upgrading. Even at that, the 1GB of PC3200 RAM I got back then (also August '03) doesn't even seem outdated yet - I'll probably just save some money and use that with whatever A64/mobo I get.

Yeah, I haven't upgraded for about a year. Got a P4-3.06, and a 128mb Radeon 9800Pro. It gets the job done.

However, I did finally break down and bought some RAM on sale at newegg (2x512 Corsair PC3200 DDR) for $99.99 so that I can finally run dual channel. I do a lot of video encoding so this should be a worhwhile upgrade for me. It is scheduled to show up tomorrow. 🙂

Everything is too darned expensive and not a huge improvement either. Plus the new videocards are PCI-Express which means I need a new mobo and CPU(and they aint cheap either) and probably new RAM, etc.

amd xp-M 2400 with a 9800pro. Nothing, not even a top of the line game has made me flinch in terms of upgrading.

Mine EPOX EP-8RDA+, Barton 2500+, Ti4600.
Bought on June 2003 🙂

Still running strong. Don't have plan to upgrade near future 🙂

1700+ with 9800 Pro, Feb 2003. Still plenty fast for me.

Will upgrade only when I find a job during college vacation.

Maybe because you started with a pretty nice system to begin with that didn't need much upgrading to remain current?

I had my 1900+, 512 PC2100, GF4 Ti4400 rig since June '02. I just replaced it this January with the signature.

2.5 years with no upgrades but a sound card is a pretty good run, if I do say so myself. That rig saw me through Doom 3 and Half-Life 2, and at decent detail levels no less. I probably could've carried it all the way to '06 if I'd really wanted to, but I think some things that showed up between now and then would've done it in...

My 1700+ and 9800Pro is doing nicely.

Until I find a game or app that justifies an upgrade, I'm standing pat.

I still read the new mobo reviews, new chipset reviews, drool over OCZ VX memory reviews and occasionally get out the calculator to do component-price sums - but I'm managing to resist.

whoa you prolly spent a ton of cash to get that rig back in oct/nov 03...
hell, i cant even afford one nowadasy! 😀

heh, my first upgrade was from a dell pentiumII 350 to an athlon t-bird 700 then to a athlon classic 850. stepped up the video to an ati radeon 9000 aiw, with 640 megs o ram. and this was all just 2 years ago.

now i got my new semi-monster (below), just a month outta the build and im already planning to upgrade it. yeesh.

I built my current PC in May or June of '03. It's a P4 2.53, ASUS P4B-533, 1 GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9500 Pro, 160 GB WD HD, etc. The rest is in my signature. The 9500 Pro I had in my 1.4 T-Bird, so I reused that, plus my CD/DVD drives, Hercules sound card, keyboard, monitor etc. The only upgrades to it were that I added 512 MB RAM to it in Mar. 2004 to total 1 GB, and I upgraded the Plextor CD burner in it to a Plextor 712 DVD-RW.

In the past few weeks, I've been making lists and price comparisons of the new hardware I'm going to buy for a new buildup. I think I do a major upgrade about every two years, with not much in between.

How many revolutionary, ground-breaking applications or games have come out since November 2003 ?

The answer: zero.

What is wrong with me?
Don't even get me started 😛

I have backed off though too. Built a Dual Opteron RAID5 setup for some upcoming Apache and mysql stuff, but that was done dirt cheap. I even traded my $300 6800GT for 2gb of reg ecc and some WDSE HDDs to finish it. Have lowly 6600Gt now and with the little gaming I do anymore it is fine.

Actually gave my A64 2.4ghz system to a friend who needed an upgrade but bad. He was still running a 2200+ KT333 combo. My notebook is a 2 1/2yr old XP-M 2000+, and my kids system is a XP-M 2.5ghz NF7-S so no new shat here. Have no intention of upgrading again unless I see proof that 1 of these new nV server boards will let me take these 242 CGs for a good ride.

I've been planning to upgrade as my rig was built in 02!!!!

Cant make my mind up as there are so many developments coming along soon. The more you research things the more you want to wait until the next bit of 'Vapour Ware' comes out and you end up getting nothing...😕

My advice, just go 939 winchester, a $300+ vid card from ATI or nV, a big, fast SATA HDD, 1gb DDR400, overclock and settle in again 🙂

ive been standing still at ~1ghz since the summer of 2000. had a p3 700@933. put in a r8500 right after it came out during that fall. spring of 2003 i got a smoking deal on a dualie mobo and i had cpus already, so i moved up to a dual 1ghz p3. nothing much has changed since then, and my system is still pretty damn quick.
