what is wrong w/ this router?

ok, I've never had wireless router at home before, so I have no idea on them. The ones taht I see on best buy and/or circut city and/or CompUSA, have wireless routers for over 100 dollars..

I go to amazon today, and see this link

this is a router that is priced at 99, but amazon is selling it for 59, but it also includes a mail in rebate of 20.00. oh, and also, I might get a 30 dollars coupon from them pretty soon too(since I applied for their credit card). so this router would be like 9.99. haha

like I said, I have no idea on routers, so Im not sure if this is a good router or not.

if I get wireless, it will probably be for 2 desktops( in 2 different rooms), and a laptop that is running around. Is this a deal that I should jump on, or what?

Its a new router from amazon so probably nothing.....

802.11b gear is getting cheaper as more options become available. If you want 802.11b it looks like a decent deal and I'd buy.

well, what else is there besides 802.11b? when I first started college 2 years ago, my school said I had to get 802.11b if I wanted the fastest possible...now, I hear stuff about 802.11G......

so how much faster is it?

I mean, this is not meant for high speed internet games.........just internet access w/ a nice amount of d/loading stuff.....I just need it for convinvience..

so my main concern is that it is fast, and has good range....

are all routers w/ 802.11B pretty much give same speed? why the big price gap? I know that my school use 802.11b, and I am happy w/ it(then again, I dont know what kind of router they use). If I buy that netgear at home, will I get the same speed(or almost the same)?

802.11g is 54Mbps while 802.11b is 11Mbps. You should be fine with 802.11b if you're just going to surf the web. If you're going to be doing a lot of file transferring then maybe you should look at 802.11g.

All the routers are supposed to give the same speed of 11Mbps but the environment that you're using the router in could affect that speed. For instance, walls and distance are some factors.

The price gap between the routers could be due to the additional features that one router has over another (such as print server, etc.).

cheap for a netgear, grab the damn thing
as mentioned, for web browsing and some file sharing (nothing excessive) it should work just fine as long as the signal is good. on her laptop with a wireless pc card my mother can get web downloads of 200+k/s which is just as good as im getting on cat5

actually, this may be worth putting up in the hot deals forum if its not there already. 802.11b stuff is really getting cheap with rebates for so much stuff. ive seen this one for 15 after rebates a few weeks ago, but 40 is still a great deal on it
