Ok, so someone tell me why teachers just pile on the homework? I mean, I don't mind reading a chapter or two answering some questions and what not, paper here and there, quizzes, tests and etc. But every single class assigning homework that seriously takes you 10+ hours to complete WHILE you have other classes and other HW to do as well as a job!

What is the point of assigning all that work besides being just completely evil? I mean some of the questions I'm being asked to complete here are group projects!

Weeds out the people who can't handle the "real world" test.

I wish you could compare how people work in college to how they work in the "real world." I'm a lazy procrastinating SOB when it comes to college homework, but in a real job I'm always running at 100% all day.

I have a full time job as well where I'm an assistant manager. I work 40-50 hours a week and I'm always running around at least at 100% for 8-12 hours a day. So I understand what it means to do "real world" work but DAMN. This is nothing but a waste of time. I mean one group project for HW, sure I can buy that, but doing 3 group projects, plus 8 disscussion questions (which are 2-3 paragraphs long) as well as a case study (which it 3+ pages long). What's the freakin point??

well if you're in california, the teachers in general are so bad that the pile on the homework in hopes that you'll learn the stuff that they failed to teach you

Nah MN, but I'm thinking that's what he's trying to do here.

I've heard that "prepares you for the real world" crap, and I don't buy it. When I was in college I had a full-time job, PLUS I was going to school full-time. I was well aware of what the "real world" was like, I didn't need a professor trying to show me. Honestly now that I'm out of college, life is a hell of a lot less stressful. I go to work, work hard, get my work done, but I can come home and relax. In college, I did the same, but then had 5-6 hours of homework to look forward to when I got home.

I think some teachers think that the only class you have is theirs.

I think teachers give you a lot of homework to punish you in advance for having a great succesful career in your future and not having to live as an underappreciated underpaid teacher (as a subconscious thing)

The trick is to get smart about it. I'm in 4th year astrophysics and get assigned a ton of homework that would take me usually 6 hrs/day to complete. Sure, I could actually DO it like a robot and plod through the mundane mathematical details, or I could use some brains, realize that my classes use the same textbooks that virtually every equivalent class at every other university uses, realize that other people have been assigned this homework, that their professors are probably similar to mine and post solutions to said homework on their webpages...

So I find the solutions on the internet, study them, realize how they are done, and use them to get good marks and make sure I'm handing in the correct solution.

Homework has 2 purposes: To get you marks, and to get you to learn the material. It usually involves a lot of work. I have just found a way to get the marks and to learn the material with a minimum amount of work. :)

This year, easy course load:

English 4AP - Questions and readings every now and then. More in-class essays than out-of-class essays.
Calc BC - Daily homework. Nothing more. Some homework is longer than others. Luckily I have an open 6th period where I usually finish it
Business - Easy class. No thought process necessary
Economics - Easy class. No thought process will get you farther. Do not answer questions truthfully, but as the teacher would like you to answer them. Even if you are 100% correct.
Physics - Easy class. Homework is assigned, but few people do it. Homework is incredibly easy, when he does check, 98% of the class can finish in the class period.
Open Period - Usually do Math homework here.
Drama - Not in a play, so do nothing during class, no homework.

Two years ago, my class load was incredible.
Some bogus reading assignment that would take at least an hour, math assignments that would take a minimum of two hours, chem honors homework that would take an hour+ when assigned (usually something once a week or so.. but those nights sucked).

I feel the same way about my job. What's with the tedium? Give me a tough problem to solve any day. But don't waste my time with BS procedures, sitting in meetings, and writing status reports. You are paying for the brains, use them, don't snooze them :D

Got a link? I'm curious to see what your homework looks like.
