What is Windows Media Center Edition?

Does it look/feel the same as Windows XP? I mean I hope the whole OS is not the interface that is shown in the screen shots. All I have seen of it is a completely blue screen with some links in the middle. Kind of like the XP Home Edition user login page.

Is it the same interface as XP in regards to a start bar/start menu apperance? What exactly is it?

Yes, MCE has all the functionality of a normal XP install. What you've seen is the "10 foot interface." A front-end for media applications that can be totally controlled by remote. MCE has a bunch of custom drivers for video to make it work right on televisions. Check out http://www.thegreenbutton.com for more info.

Yep.
MCE isn't required for TV viewing, but it's interface makes it more pleasant than the TV card manufacturers' software, IMO.

Yes, TV cards have a coax in for basic cable input. If you have digital cable or satellite, you can use the SVideo or component in for video/audio in, and use the IR blaster that comes with the MCE remote (also purchasable through Newegg) to control a digital cable or satellite set-top box.

Actually, I have another question. This thing can use ANY remote and ANY TV Tuner card right? Or is there a specific remote, and a specific TV Tuner card that I need to get full functionality?

I don't know if you can use any TV Tuner card, just check the manufacturer's website before purchasing to see if MCE 2005 supports it. I've never tried any other remote besides the MCE one, so I don't know...I guess you could control the TV Card, but nothing else.

Well, on Dell, it says that if you buy the TV Tuner that comes with it, as well as the remote, it will delay the shipping date from Dec 20th to Jan 18th. This is bad. Very bad. 🙁. There has to be another alternative right?

while MCE 2005 supports a lot more hardware than 2004 you still need a compatable TV card:

You dont have to buy a OEM system from Dell, if you wanted you could build the PC yourself; there should be some vendors out there that are selling MCE 2005 without hardware. Obviously you're not going to get the same support this way, but if you cant get what you want from Dell, et. al. than at least you can build it.

Buy the TV Tuner and remote from another source? Newegg doesn't have a good TV Tuner, but they do sell the remote. I've heard good things about the Hauppauge WinTV 150 and 250 MCE cards as well as the AVerMedia UltraTV 1500 MCE in MCE 2005. I think they're available at other major retailers.

EDIT: Thanks spyordie, couldn't find that site for some reason.

Also, don't try to use an AIW card with MCE for Tivo functionality. They have MCE drivers for them, but they don't have hardware MPEG2 encoding like standalone TV cards, so unless you have a super-powerful system, you'll drop frames & get audio stuttering when recording.

Do you know which card you have in your PC(I assume by your knowledge that you have MCE). I would love to just get one name that i know owkrs. I have been on the phone with Dell, being transferred between 3 departments tring to figure out which TV Tuner Card will be compatible with my system.

I am running a Dell Dimension 8400, with a GeForce 6800 video card and a P4 3.2 GHz. I get the feeling that the AIW cards might not work with the nVidia video card. Argh. This is frustrating.

Will the Hauppauge work?

The cards that are compatable are cards that include both a Tv tuner and a Mpeg2 encoder.

The TV Tuner part is just the part that allows you to select frequencies, just like what is used in your TV or radio itself. For instance in order for a TV to have a picture-in-picture feature has to have two tuners.

Now to understand why MCE requires a mpeg2 encoder you have to understand how PVR works.

A PVR works like this:
signal from cable ---> tuner selects frequency and turns it into something the computer can understand ---> the media stream is encoded into a digital format such as mpeg2 ---> the media is recorded onto harddrive ---> video player program reads the media off of the harddrive and decodes the digital format ---> you watch "live" TV.

That's how it does the time shifting and all that. Your reading the file off of the harddrive just like any other media file and you can go backwards and forwards and skip over stuff just like any other video file.

Other PVR software like Mythtv supports using software encoding of format in addition to using hardware encoding cards. For Mythtv you can use software mpeg4 and mjpeg formats for tuner cards that do not have a mpeg2 encoder included with them. The major disavantage of this is that it requires massive amounts of CPU effort to accomplish.

The file must be simultaniously encoded and decoded at the same time. That and the quality of image isn't that great, since mpeg4 and mjpeg are designed to be fast and make small files while Mpeg2 is designed for high quality images. Mpeg2 is what is used on DVD's and digital cable, for instance.

(note that you don't confuse digital with HDTV. HDTV can be either analog or digital.)

However MCE only supports mpeg2 hardware encoders because it's less likely to cause quality issues and makes things easier, even if it's a bit more expensive.

A example of a card that includes both tv tuners and a mpeg2 hardware encoder is the hauppage WinPVR-350 (and 250)

A example of a card that only sports a Tv Tuner is this guy

Notice the price difference.

I personally use 2 cards in my Mythtv setup. A WinPVR-250 and a ATI Wonder VE (note that All-in-Wonder tv/video cards use completely different chipsets, then just the plain tv card) The price difference is worth it.

The only exception that I know of for MCE is that ATI provides special drivers or add-ons that fake hardware encoding in software, but I'd avoid using that.

The WinPVR stuff includes a remote, btw.

Check out MCE's website for more infromation:

(ps I prefer Mythtv over MCE, but it requires some Linux expertese to run, but it's free and more flexible/capable)

Well, what I want to do with MCE is

watch one channel & record another.
Pause live tv
Record up to 3 channels at once

These thigns are all listed on the Windows MCE Website, however I'm afraid that if I buy a tv tuner seperately, I will end up missing out on these things. On the review for the WinPVR350, a guy said - You must watch what you're recording. That is a huge turn off. Will MCE provide software/drivers or something that can overcome this?

That website doesn't seem to help very much. nVidia's NVTV is not for sale to consumer's, Adaptec's Adaptec dual TV tuner with a hardware MPEG-2 encoder is nowhere to be found. I can't seem to find anything useful on that site. Probably because I'm a newb >_<

I don't use MCE for TV features yet.

Or 2 dual TV Tuners.

I wasnt aware that MCE would support multiple tuner cards, but if the site says it can record 3 channels at once than I'm assuming this to be true.

Yes, this is a new feature to MCE 2005.

And would you guys say it is worth it to get the products from Dell. It woould ship much later, like in January, but I know that it will work, and it will be what I want, and it will have the correct remote, and I won't void the warranty by adding the PCI Tuner. I really would like this, and am contemplating on waiting until mid/late january in order to get it.

If you're nervous about building yourself, check out HP's MCE systems as well, they're continually highly rated. Also, check out Niveus Media's MCE systems if you've got money to burn. 😉

Well, I am going to buy the Dell. It is the nest looking PC I've seen for 1500. I don't think you can build the same one for cheaper. Mainly because it has a 19" LCD monitor, a 6800, a P4 3.2 GHz, 1GB RAM, and a 250GB SATA HDD. This is all 1500(w/o tax. Free shipping). Now to add on the TV Tuner card & remote is $126, and it wont ship until Jan 20th. Is it worth the wait, or will I be OK if I buy the card and remote elsewere?
