Back in HS, my friend's dad used to make what he called SOS for us, but it was biscuits drowned in country gravy with little bits of chipped beef in it. It was delicious
He made badass country ham as well.

In the southeast they have Krystal, which is like a far more extreme version of white castle. The "meat" pieces are slightly larger than a quarter (the bun is much taller than the "meat"), and they are served in those paper ketchup holder thingies, for $0.10. You can actually order exra grease on the side, or just order grease by itself, served in another one of those paper holders the same size as the one the burger is in, for $0.05.

They are the nastiest burgers imaginable. People go there when there is nothing else open (and they are tired of Denny's) late at night, thinking it can't be as bad as they remember. Took a week to get the stench out of my car the last time I picked up a Krystal.

I learned about White Castle through the History Channel -- since there isn't a White Castle restaurant close by, I satisfied my curiousity with the frozen WC burgers bought at my local supermarket.

IMHO, they're quite good, but don't eat them for an entire week >.<

Their frozen supermarket stuff is ok but I don't trust the stuff in their stores. I went to a White Castle last month and spent half the morning on the toilet. :(

White Castle is synonomous with "food of the gods"

it's just that good.

Little burgers, chicken sandwiches...

mmmmm....chiken rings.

that's why they're called sliders.

beastie boys: white castle fries come in only one size!

(only sort of true, they have the normal size and the sack of fries, iirc)

LOL

I've never been to WC, but from this thread, it's definitely something I will do before I die.

Google?

If you must know, it's a fast food chain afaik, that sells burgers. (Never been though, I only know of it from Harold and Kumar, Beastie Boys, and the Ebay auction).
If you have Firefox, you can just type "White Castle" into the address bar...

Just to recap:

The holes allow the burgers to cook without flipping (my Grandparents lived down the street from and knew the guy that invented the die they use to press the burgers)
You either love them or hate them
They're normally consumed 5-50 at a time
Their sides are good but the chicken stuff (rings, sandwiches) is too expensive
They literally "slyde" right through you (hence the "slyder" name), so don't feel like you got poisoned if you're on the crapper for a week after you have a couple

Back when they wrote that, it was 100% true. ;)

And hey, they've got relatively wholesome breakfast food, IMO; much better, and actually less greasy than McDonald's. (Of course, if you've got a few extra minutes, just about any diner owns any fast food joint for breakfast.)

you can get frozen sliders at virtually any supermarket here in Texas. they're pretty good, IMO. having never been to a real White Castle, I used to nuke them per the instructions, then take off the top bun and put a little piece of lettuce and a slice of tomato on them.

<edit> maybe "virtually any" was a little bit of an exaggeration </edit>

Mainly in reference to their hash browns. Every time I've ever gotten them they had enough grease in them to press out an ounce or two into a glass, and that's not an exaggeration.

You'd get a very strange look if you asked for lettuce and tomato at a WC restaurant.

Dammit, so if I get sick eating a Wendy's burger than Whitecastle is totally out of the picture, huh???

Now that you mention it, I do see them in the frozen foods section basically every time I go to the store. And I believe I used to eat them when I was a small child (~15 years ago)....don't think I've had any since though. Maybe I'll have to pick some up at the store again. :)
