What is/was your college major's "weed-out" class?

Heh, it was a terrific class and the professor was amazing. I took the 2nd class in the series because he taught it. Those classes nearly killed me but damn, I learned alot.

At my second school, a private university, I don't recall any "weed out" classes. To be honest, it was all so easy compared to the public university (U of MN IT). I do recall many people having problems in the low-level programming classes, which were java based. It didn't make sense to me, they were easy classes...

Where do you go now?

Anyways, for me to get my ME, we are required to take comp science (C++) 1511 and that pritty much weeded out 50% of the ME majors because the teacher sucked balls and the damn TAs couldnt help because they could barely speek english

Chemical Engineer here. Every one of our courses are weed out courses. It sucks seeing class sizes drop as each semester goes on.

I hated assembly language. Absolutely no use for it in my opinion unless if you plan to actually do work in that field in the future... I don't think I did well in that class. Fortunately I transferred schools soon afterwards and didn't have to worry about it anymore.

The company I work for built their original products with ultra cheap hardware that used Assembly 8051. They were able to sell their products cheaper than the competition could manufacture.

It has it's uses.

Design 105 (first design course).........final was house designed (for madam X, she was a very particular client) in 1 week.....slept like 2hrs. the first two nights, and then did not sleep for the rest of the week.....most fun ever! (the entire class did this)

Our university used their general ed classes to weed people out. One year 65% of the freshman failed this one guys biology class. Once you got into a major the classes were more interesting and the professors worked with you more to make sure you are learning it.

But I agree back in 01,02 it was then #1 weed-out class at UMD, but after that
I hear it became easier since too many ppl were failing

Many years ago, Pascal II was the course that weeded out the comp sci majors (I breezed through it with the highest grade in the class)
I majored in mathematics; I don't recall any "weeding out" classes for us, except our courses tended to weed out students from other majors that required the various math classes (Discrete, Calc II, and especially Diff EQ's (which weeded out the students in a 5 year engineering program)

I own the assembly language. While everyone was claiming how hard it was, I breezed right through it.

Eh? I thought Engineering Fundemental was a joke. A bit of CAD (CadKey on about a dozen floppies - not a bad program for the time), some programming (FORTRAN). I don't recall it being that bad - of course that was about 18 years ago.

At VT I think the big engineering weed out class was 5 hour calc :Q If you got behind you were screwed. Some people though the big chemistry lecture was a weedout class also.

poli sci 10 - intro to political theory, and when i took it, i think i read locke, nietzche, marx, and i forgot who else.

it can be boring to heck, and not as much fun as the other classes - american politcs, intro to IR, and comparative politics, which goes more into modern issues.

Yea I took it in Spring 01'. It was friggin impossible ... did you have postow? i had him, and i'm glad I had him instead of charles, because postow was the one who made the test, so atleast I was used to his style of teaching, no matter how weird, deranged, and impossible he made it.

I took it w/ plane her first year teaching here She made the first exam wwaaay to easy... i got 98 or something ridiculous. the next one kicked the average down to 60 something I think.. heh.

I've seen a lot of CS majors get hit by the 311/330 combo tho. All of enee is weed-out IMO.. ha. 244 being the first one.

At UW, we have a top 10 CS program. The two intro to comp programming classes are weed out classes. If you dont have at least a 3.7 in both classes, u won't get admitted to the program.
