What is up with those posters on Slashdot.org?

I mean really what is up with them. Majority of them haven't yet realized that Slashdot is sort of a serious place and replies like "first post" or stupid replies will simply get modded down and no one will ever read them.

Secondly, most of them sound so arrogant. They all act like they are CEOs or VPs of major computer firms and can say what ever they want. In reality most of them are regular IT/Computer related employees way low in the food chain. If it's not that, then they act like some really skilled, really genius people.

Thirdly, what is it with the extreme Linux fascination. Being pro linux is just fine, but seems like those people dream, eat, sleep, talk, live Linux. Either that or a lot of them are just fanboys who just like to talk about it. Post anything about software, and you have hundreds of people claiming they will never use it because its not on Linux. How out of touch from reality are these people?

Whenever I read the comments on slashdot, I get a sense of arrogance, stupidity and childlike behaviour.

I know what you are but what am I?

I am a CEO of a multi-million-dollar computer consulting company. See my sig for proof. 😉

I think it's basically the same problem we have here, only on a larger level - nerds acting bigger than they are. With all the YAGTs here, people always say, "TALK TO HER YOU IDIOT!" but what's the chance that all these critical people have the balls to walk up to some random hot girl and ask her to lunch? Almost nil. That's why I don't participate in YAGTs - I have a girlfriend and it took a lot of overcoming shyness to get close to her. I can't say "Just talk to her!!" because I know it doesn't work that way.

It basically comes down to all these attention-starved computer guys making themselves sound important on /. and it's unavoidable. Thank goodness for the awesome moderating staff there though, or else it'd end up a lot like ATOT. 😀

Uh, yeah, they realize exactly what happens. Either they don't care, or find it amusing, or whatever. Everyone knows what happens to a "fp" on slashdot. That's why the majority are posted as AC.

Slashdot is a tar pit. There are some smart people, ok, there are lots of smart people there, but most of them have idiotic attitudes. Slashdot is just the same crap over and over every day of the week. I don't know how people stay active there so long, I tired of it pretty quickly. I read the front page and sometimes read the linked stories if they look interesting, but I never read posts anymore.

Thirdly, what is it with the extreme Linux fascination. Being pro linux is just fine, but seems like those people dream, eat, sleep, talk, live Linux.
Alot of them are linux dorks, but there are some windows people there who are always annoying the linux people and vice versa.

Either that or a lot of them are just fanboys who just like to talk about it.
Pretty much.

Post anything about software, and you have hundreds of people claiming they will never use it because its not on Linux.
It's likely they *can't* use it, because it's not on linux. Believe it or not, there are people who don't use windows at all. Obviously windows software is going to be pretty worthless to them.

How out of touch from reality are these people?
Pretty out of touch, but then again, reality kinda blows. I like to stay out of it most of the time.

Whenever I read the comments on slashdot, I get a sense of arrogance, stupidity and childlike behaviour.
Can't argue with that! 😀

Totally.

There is no moderating "staff"... slashdot is moderated by the users themselves. Well, the editors get unlimited mod points, yes, but still, the majority of moderation is by users.

Ah-ha. I didn't know that. Well thank goodness for the honest (somewhat) readers and posters there. They keep it reputable and somewhat informative.

I used to hang out at a local message board for my university, and one day I posted such a thread. I said that I need help talking to this girl. That thread turned into a flame thread, all ragging on me, calling me a loser. THey all claimed to get chicks, and have big cajones. I felt really bad that I am the only one with this chick problem, all these people are some players. Well later on we had a forum meet. I met a lot of these so called "Online players". Now I realize that to get chicks you don't have to be super good looking, just a good personality, funny, etc. But some of those people didn't seem to have that. Neither did most of them know how to brush their teeth, shave properly or dress up (T-shirt and denim shorts). From that day on, I learned to have a distrust of anything that is said on forums.

Hah, you have way too much respect for slashdot. 🙂 Slashdot is a steaming pile of overgrown teenage nerds and people who think they know everything. If you ever look into the "darker side" of slashdot, it's pretty insane the amount of analysis that has been done on the social aspects of slashdot. The troll underground is pretty crazy too, do a google search for "WIPO Troll" if you are curious, there are people who do nothing but troll slashdot every day. That's one f-ed up place.

Okay with that out of the way I'll try to respond with substance.

Pretty much. 🙂 Firingsquad.com News section is the exact same way, you set your filter higher than 0, the news poster takes the first post himself, or you learn to automatically discount the first few replies. Something odd in humans wants us to show off our fast-reaction skills.

In reality most of them have to be pretty low on the food chain to have the spare time to become /. regulars to begin with! There are some very rare exceptions to this rule.

Of course you could be really, REALLY optimistic and think about it the other way. These people did find and figure out how to start posting at a forum like that, and unfortunately those two things alone take a level of competency the world sees all too rarely. The rest of it IMO usually just boils down to experience and age.
Thirdly, what is it with the extreme Linux fascination. Being pro linux is just fine, but seems like those people dream, eat, sleep, talk, live Linux. Very out of touch. The same people hate Microsoft for the simple fact that they are successful to the point of near monopoly, how silly. Open source is a fantastic institution, even revolutionary, but there is a reason the world prefers Windows to *nix. Hint: It's not just because the world is stupid!

Yeah, it is very strange to see people's online personality, and then meet them in real life. It's sorta cool, in that it makes it easier to mentally link the two, but there are definitely some people who act very differently online, and in very lame ways that they would not dare do in real life.

I'm very much the same online as I am in real life. I am trusting and I take a lot of things at face value. And I'm intelligent. And good looking. Did I mention I'm smart and cute in real life? 🙂:Q

That Carmack guy sure seems high on the food chain.
Somehow I don't think he is just some tech geek incharge of backing up the servers at work.

They worship Carmack at that place. But I suppose many of us do here too.

And to the slashdot types, all I have to say is that Linux is only free if your time is worth nothing.

Well, in the first post it says:

In reality most of them are regular IT/Computer related employees way low in the food chain. If it's not that, then they act like some really skilled, really genius people.

I am not exactly contradicting this.
I am qualifying it by pointing out that some posters are both high on the food chain and are really skilled genius types.

Ok. But I think everyone is aware that there are some big name people that post there, e.g. Bruce Perens.... hm, he's the only one I can think of 😛 Well, there are quite a few anyways, even if they don't come to mind at the moment..
