Why are dvd's made using a 2.35:1 aspect ratio while widescreen tv's have a 16:9 ratio?
I mean you buy a widescreen tv so you can enjoy the "whole" movie, but since the aspect ratio is off on both the tv and dvd you will still have parts cut out.

There is nothing "cut out" for god's sake!

And many movies are 1.85:1 ratio (16:9 tv), so if they made tv's 2.35:1 then the 1.85:1 movies would have black bars on the sides.

yep! But yeah, movies shot in 2.35:1 and exhibited on 16:9 TVs will still have black bars, just not nearly as much as they do on 4:3 sets. Unless shabby is talking about zooming, in which case he's right you would have to cut off the side(s) of the movie to avoid the black bars.

They had to compromise somewhere... TVs just wouldn't be practical at 2.35:1. Most TV programming just wouldn't benefit from an aspect ratio that wide.

Maybe i have a bad "taste" in movies but all the ones that i have are 2.35:1.

Sure they would, you could watch two channels at once :)
