what is up with people who dont pay at the pump?

Never paid at a pump, not even sure if any of the stations here support that. The ones I've seen that have a card swipe say to pay inside. There's only a few stations I regularly go to though. Grab the pump, pump till it stops, notice pump number, go inside, tell them pump number (usually they know before) and pay that amount. I usually end up buying a couple chocolate bars too. I just finished paying 60-70 bucks, what's another couple dollars eh. 😀

Paying at the pump just prolong the experience. No thanks.

LOL, it takes all of a few seconds to hit "Pay outside credit" and swipe your card. It isn't rocket science...it takes much longer to walk from the pump to the gas station cashier and wait in line while people write their checks or use cash.

For anyone with decent credit it's stupid to pay inside...since you can get a 5% cash back on gas credit card so it nullifies any cash discount a gas station may offer. And security concerns are void as well...you shouldn't be using debit on anything if you have a credit card. And for the paranoid that are so scared their credit card number will be lifted (and the chances of that are what now?), you just call the credit card company and tell them fraud is going on.

So,
1. cash discount
2. more secure - pumps could be tampered with, and readers installed to skim CC info.
3. some cards/gas stations result on a hold for an amount greater than you get. Imagine driving half way across the country & having a $150 hold every time you used your card to purchase gas. (Someone had a thread about this a few weeks ago; I've never paid attention, so don't know if I've ever had a hold.)

And all nullified if you have decent credit. You shouldn't be using the credit card if you're nearing the credit limit...and it takes a simple phone call to increase the limit (again, if you have decent credit).

Hey buddy! No one is tracking my fuel purchases, and therefore my travels. 😀

The crooks are installing much better card skimmers inside the pumps now.

I use my ATM card at the pump. Requires a PIN number every time. No Visa or MC logo. Can't function as a credit card.

Or I could just walk 25' and pay with cash, and it's a done deal. No paperwork, no nothing; done.

WHY are there people that have no debit card?

Because I don't want one.

Just another thing I have to keep track of.

With cash I don't have to go online or look at bank statements to check my balance. I just have to open my wallet and look.

.

I pay at the pump with my debit card. Same price as cash here. Whenever I go inside to get a Coke or something I am always amused by the folks in there paying cash for $5 worth of gas, and don't even know what pump they're on.

Or press a button on the pump, swipe your card, pump your gas. Who seriously is worrying about their credit limit all the time that that's even a concern? Again, anyone with decent credit should be paying with a credit card at the pump. Otherwise you're wasting your time and possibly other peoples time if all the pumps are full.

So, you never have to pay your card off? You just make purchases and never think about it again? What card do you have? I want one :^D

Sometimes I like to get cash back so Ill pay inside. If I dont need cash back or dont plan on buying something inside, then Ill pay at the pump.

wow, i did not know this card existed. i have a chase freedom but it only gives %5 in 2 of 4 quarters of the year

doppel you are my money saving hero of the day!
Thank you! somebody else on AT got me onto it. I've had the card for over a year and it's still giving me 5% cash back without any bullshit! That means no "this is our deal this month" type bullshit or anything stupid. You need to be a member of some group to get the card but you can pay for one-time membership to that group for about $15 when you get the card and then never think about it again. Otherwise, no caveats or gotchas at all.

I pay my card in full each month...that's what you should do with credit cards or else your cash back rewards are taken away by interest payments.

The PenFed card used to be better though...still 5% on gas, 3% groceries...but it used to give 1.25% on everything else and you could simply use the cash back bonus to pay off some of your statement balance. Now it's 1% cash back for everything else and you have to wait for a stupid prepaid visa card in the mail for your cash back...can't just credit it to your statement anymore which is stupid.

I think this was an option, a change for me a while back that I ignored--but I assure you I'm still (I just checked December) getting cash back directly to my balance--no checks at all. I ignored their offer to "upgrade" a while back.

I only use the card on gas, fwiw.

penfed FTMFW

I don't know why not everybody with good credit has a penfed card. I've tried to do my part, I evangelize it, but some people are horses led to water. I have a co-worker proud that his card gives him 5% off one kind of gas station on certain days of the week and I had to tell him that penfed is all gas stations 24/7. Crestfallen.

never heard of penfed WTF is it

to get a dr pepper and reeses of course..

or if it's one of those super gay non cash taking pumps and i only carry huge rapper style knots of cash in a roll
